SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Yellowjacket women's track and field team was back in action Saturday, competing in their final event before the 2024 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Yellowjackets had a good showing Thursday when the Rider/Bolsorff got underway at Macalester College. And as good as Thursday was, Saturday was better.
Leading the way for the Yellowjackets was
Sidney Bader (Milltown, Wis./Unity). The Yellowjacket sophomore had a strong performance last week, winning the javelin at Concordia St. Paul. Saturday she was even better. No, she didn't win the event, but her mark did break the school record. Bader finished second in the javelin Saturday, with a heave of 35.79 meters. In addition to placing second, Bader established a new high-water mark at UW-Superior breaking the previous record of 35.16 meters, set by Cori Glau in 2005.
Newcomer
Simone Stephens (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) continued her sensational freshman season with the Yellowjackets, finishing the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:54.05. Stephens' time was good enough for a fourth-place finish.
Meet Notes
- Bader finished 16th and 11th, respectively, in the discus and shot put, in addition to her big throw in the javelin.
- Lilley Smith (Ironwood, Mich./Ironwood) was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing with a time of 14:18.45.
- Myla Volk (Wabeno, Wis./Wabeno) had a pair of top-ten finishes in the field events. Volk was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 9.51 meters, and ninth in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 1.30 meters.
- Janae Widiker (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) was tied with Volk at 1.30 meters.
- The Yellowjacket 4-x-100-meter relay team, made up of Summer Hesseldahl (International Falls, Minn./Falls), Allison Alessi (Shakopee, Minn./Prior Lake), Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) and Cora Schmitz (Luck, Wis./Unity) placed fifth with a time of 50.95 seconds.
Next up for the Yellowjackets is the 2024 UMAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Minnesota Morris. Events get underway at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 3.
