‘Jackets Slate Seven to All-UMAC Baseball List

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Seven Yellowjackets were named to the All-UMAC baseball squad, as the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) revealed its postseason award winners in a release Wednesday.

Senior Isaac Fugere (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East), juniors Payton Steiner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) and Ethan Coady (Toronto, Ontario/Etobicoke School of the Arts), along with sophomore Aiden Pfeifer (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and freshman Zach Romans (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael) received a spot on the All-UMAC First Team. Collecting honorable mention citations were sophomores Tanner Voight (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) and Brian O'Dwyer (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove Senior).

Riley Harbaugh (Banks, Ore./Banks) was the Yellowjackets' representative on the UMAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Fugere's fifth season as a Yellowjacket saw him start 39-of-41 games behind the plate, collecting his third-straight campaign with a first team selection. He clubbed .313 (46-for-147) with a slugging percentage of .456. He ends the campaign with 46 hits, placing him second on the team and ninth in the UMAC. Fugere's 34 runs leads the squad while sitting eighth in the league. Defensively he was a brick wall, committing just one error in 218 putouts while gunning down 13 on the basepaths. To begin the season, Fugere batted .500 (8-for-16), finishing with three doubles and clobbering two home runs with nine RBIs on his way to receive player of the week honors from the UMAC.

Steiner grabs his second consecutive All-UMAC First Team selection in 2024 while starting in 36-of-37 contests. His batting average of .343 is good for second on the Yellowjackets, which is only .001 points away from tying Voight. His team-leading 47 hits sees him crack the top ten in UMAC standings, but his six triples on the season has him tied for first in the circuit and stands alone on the 'Jackets' leaderboard. In right field, Steiner boasts a .977 fielding percentage with 85 total putouts. Beginning with Martin Luther Mar. 29 he was on an offensive tear, collecting 17 hits in a nine-game hitting streak.

Coady receives All-UMAC honors for the first time in his Yellowjacket career after a stellar performance out of the bullpen. The submarine specialist dominated conference play, allowing just nine hits and four runs against UMAC competitors while boasting a 3-1 record. Coady's first victory came against North Central (Apr. 14), hurling a shutout inning as UWS downed the Rams 9-1. His next outings against Minnesota Morris (Apr. 21) and Northwestern (Apr. 25) were excellent, pitching eight innings with only four hits, one walk, four strikeouts and zero runs for his second and third victories, respectively.

Pfeifer made a seamless transition from the bullpen to the starting rotation this season, earning a 7-2 record with his first team selection. His 2.25 earned run average sits him atop Yellowjacket standings and second in the UMAC, and the same goes for his opposing batting average (.209) and earned runs allowed (15). Pfiefer hurled 60 innings this season, allowing only 46 hits while fanning 47. In his first start, he limited the Auggies of Augsburg University to just two hits and one run while striking out five in seven innings of work, collecting his first win. In the opening game of the UMAC Tournament, Pfiefer set the tone, hurling a four-hit shutout against Northwestern to lead the 'Jackets to a 12-0 victory.

Romans quickly emerged as UW-Superior's top starter early in the season. The freshman hurler ended his season with 55.1 innings pitched, allowing 54 hits while fanning 53 conjoined with a team-second and conference-third ERA of 2.77 for a 5-2 record. Opponents were only able to hit .245 against him during his 11 appearances on the mound. In UMAC standings, Romans also cracked the top ten in wins (fifth), hits allowed (sixth), runs allowed (sixth), earned runs (third) and walks (fourth). His most dominant outing came against Crown Apr. 5, as he threw a four-hit shutout while striking out five in a 10-0 rout of the Polars.

Voight was a staple in the lineup this season for UWS, starting 34-of-37 games at either first base or designated hitter. He led the 'Jackets in batting average with a .347 clip (43-for-124) while clobbering a team-best eight home runs. His name consistently shows up in the UMAC's top ten, including fifth in slugging percentage (.651), tenth in on base percentage (.468), fifth in on base and slugging percentage (1.119), third in runs scored (43), seventh in RBIs (36), and third in round trippers (nine). Voight's strongest series came against Minnesota Morris, going 8-13 (.615) while scoring five runs, collecting five RBIs and launching two home runs in a three-game sweep of the Cougars.

O'Dwyer enjoyed a sophomore season starting in all 39 games played. He improved his batting average by 49 points from last season, swinging at a .302 clip in the 2024 campaign while adding seven stolen bags. O'Dwyer accounted for 38 hits, featuring nine doubles, three triples, and a home run. Predominantly manning the hot corner and on occasion playing shortstop, he ended the year with an identical .928 fielding percentage from last season, while being a part of five double plays. O'Dwyer compiled a ten-game hitting streak for nearly a full month, stemming from the Yellowjackets' spring trip to the Sunshine State.

UW-Superior ended their season with an overall record of 22-19, securing their second straight season with a winning percentage above .500 and over 20 wins in program history.
