Ohman Enters Top 25 in Shot Put

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Once conference track and field championships are completed, teams and athletes begin the "last chance" circuit, meets in different locations where teams and individuals get their last chances to qualify for nationals.

For the Yellowjackets, Thursday was the last of the last chances, as they competed on the second day of the Midwest Twilight, hosted by Augustana College at the Knowlton Outdoor Athletic Complex. Regionally, the Midwest Twilight is one of the largest gatherings of NCAA Division III teams.

Two Yellowjacket men competed in the meet's first day Wednesday. There were more in action Thursday, and it was another big day for one of the most decorated Yellowjackets of all time.

Fresh off winning the Mertz Mortorelli Award as the top male athlete of the year for 2023-24, Nate Ohman (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) moved a step closer to qualifying for the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Wednesday, Ohman placed 18th in the hammer throw with a heave of 52.30 meters. He followed it up with a big day in the shot put. Ohman started things with a 15.29 meter on his first throw before fouling on the second. He improved his mark to 15.34 meters on his third throw. Then, on his fourth attempt, Ohman hit a mark of 16.20 meters, which vaulted him up the leaderboard and also established a new personal record. In his fifth attempt, Ohman had a throw of 16.07 meters before fouling on his sixth and final try.

In the end, Ohman ended up in second place, but more importantly, he moved into the top 25 in NCAA Division III. The top 22 throwers qualify for the national meet, but Ohman still stands an outside chance of making it to nationals.

Senior David Collins (Ironwood, Mich./Luther L. Wright) also set a personal record Thursday. Competing in the 1,500-meter run, Collins came across the line with a time of 4:09.75, finishing in 37th place. Collins bettered his previous record time by just over three seconds.

Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum), who competed in the javelin Wednesday, was back in action Thursday. He completed the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.29 seconds, good enough for 26th place. Foster was also supposed to compete n the 400-meter hurdles but withdrew from the event.

Senior Ethan Westimayer (Laona, Wis./Laona) competed in a pair of sprints Thursday. Westimayer finished 33rd in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.63 meters. He also ran in the 100-meter dash preliminaries, finishing in 16th place with a time of 11.28 seconds.

The final Yellowjacket to compete Thursday was Ben Babcock (Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area). In the triple jump, Babcock finished in 21st with a mark of 12.36 meters.

The Yellowjackets and Ohman will now wait until entries are finalized to see if he will compete at the national meet. For the rest of the Yellowjackets, the 2024 outdoor season comes to a close.
