Yellowjackets Open Season with 6-1 Win over River Falls

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's tennis team commenced its 2024-25 season at the Yellowjackets Tennis Complex. Hitting the courts Sunday afternoon with a beautiful sunny and 75 degrees with a slight breeze off the lake, the Yellowjackets would start the season with a 6-1 win over the Falcons.

Starting the day with doubles, the Yellowjackets would go 1-2 but would go on to sweep singles 6-0. New this season, the ITA changed the scoring so all three doubles matches now count for a single point, this is where UWRF would secure their lone point today.

Match Notes
  • The pairing of Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) and Anouk Bluemm at No. 1 doubles would fall to Sarah Baker and Sydney Wiener of UWRF  7-6. With it tied 6-6 River Falls won the tiebreaker 7-5.
  • Elif Oezen and Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) as a pair for the Yellowjackets in the No.1 doubles spot would fall to their UWRF opponents Chloe Struss and Alexis Budzinski 6-4.
  • The Yellowjackets' lone doubles win would come from the No.3 doubles pairing Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) and Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) with a match score of 7-6 and a tie breaker of 8-6 over Grace Aerts and Sofia Bach.
  • Swinging into singles play, Tejada at No. 1 singles would sweep Wiener of UWRF with final scores of 6-3 and 7-5.
  • For the Yellowjackets at No. 2 singles was Bluemm, and she would battle with Budzinski of UWRF to tiebreaker in the third set. Bluemm came out on top in the first set 6-3, dropped the second 6-4 and would clinch the in a tiebreaker, 10-8.
  • Oezen of UWS and Chloe Struss of UWRF competed at No. 3 singles with a first set taken to a tiebeaker. The final scores of this watch were 7-6 (7-0 tiebreaker) and 6-1 with Oezen taking the win.
  • A battle at No. 4 singles between Yellowjacket Araujo De Barros and Falcon Baker took the match to three sets, needing a tiebreaker. Araujo De Barros took the first set 6-1 while Baker took the second 6-4. Araujo De Barros would take the third tiebreaker 10-4 to complete the win.
  • At No. 5 singles, Jessi Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) for the Yellowjackets would sweep Alicia Langbehn of the Falcons with final scores of 6-1 and 6-3.
  • With a quick No.6 singles match, Jonas would take down UWRF opponent, Hailey Reuvers, 6-1 and 6-0.
The Yellowjackets are back in action Sept. 20-22 for the 2024 ITA Midwest Reginal in St. Peter, Minn.
