Yellowjacket Women Put on Strong Showing Before Falling to UMD

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's tennis team was in exhibition mode Wednesday, as it hosted NCAA Division II Minnesota Duluth at the Yellowjacket Outdoor Tennis Complex.

Because it was an exhibition, the teams didn't have to play according to the new scoring system instituted by the NCAA and the ITA, and instead played a full slate of 12 matches – four in doubles and eight in singles.

And the Yellowjackets had a very strong showing on the day. Trailing 3-1 after doubles play, the Yellowjackets dominated in early singles, winning matches in positions one through four. In the end, however, the Bulldogs overcame the deficit and defeated the Yellowjackets 7-5.

In doubles action, Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) and Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) scored the only win for the Yellowjackets, defeating the UMD duo of Lily Nelson and Carly Chaney at No. 3 doubles, 6-4.

Match Notes
  • At No. 1 singles, Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) defeated UMD's Chaney 6-3 to, at the time, pull the Yellowjackets even with the Bulldogs, 2-2.
  • Anouk Bluemm (Nuernberg, Germany/Wilhelm-Loege Gymnasium) earned the first singles win for the Yellowjackets Wednesday, win 6-2 at No. 2 singles over the Bulldogs' Luana Da Silva.
  • Elif Oezen (Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany/Einstein Gymnasium) and Jessi Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Oezen earned a 6-4 win over Sydney Freidrich, while Kukowski bested Olivia Honsey 6-3. The two wins put the Yellowjackets up 5-3 at the time.
  • Also competing in singles play were Amery Oberg (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) (No. 5), Stella Harris (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) (No. 6), Lillian Kimber (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) (No. 7) and Kylie Coel (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) (No. 8).
  • Competing at No. 2 doubles, Bluemm and Oezen played the longest match of the session, ultimately falling to Olivia Gorton and Cortney Eppen, 6-7 in a tiebreaker.
  • Kukowski and Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) narrowly missed pushing their match at No. 4 doubles to a tiebreaker, falling to Honsey and Brynne Folden, 5-7.
  • Tejada and Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) teamed up to play at No. 1 doubles, where they were bested by Friedrich and Da Silva 3-6.
The Yellowjackets will be back in regular season play this weekend when they compete at the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. Matches are schedule for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
