SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket men's track and field team opened the indoor season back in December, and after more than a month away, UWS was back in action Saturday, playing host to the Twin Ports Open at the Lydia Thering Fieldhouse in the Marcovich Wellness Center on the UW-Superior campus.
And although it's been weeks since the last meet, several of the Yellowjackets appeared in mid-season form Saturday.
Leading the way for the Yellowjackets was
Earl Foster (Forest Lake, Minn./Spectrum). The Yellowjacket senior had a big day Saturday, winning the 200-meter hurdles. Foster's time of 25.39 seconds not only established a new personal record, but also a new school record. Foster's finish topped the previous school record of 25.51 seconds, set by Matt Reijo in 2014.
Another noteworthy finish for the Yellowjackets came in the mile, where Superior runners occupied the top three places.
Aidan Doherty (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) was the race winner, coming in with a time of 4:40.11.
Zach Reese (Zimmerman, Minn./Spectrum) was right on Doherty's heels, finishing second with a time of 4:40.48.
Ben Plackner (Bovey, Minn./Greenway) earned a third-place finish, crossing the line with a time of 4:42.41.
Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage) was victorious in the pole vault, clearing the bar at a height of 3.97 meters.
Meet Notes
- Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior) finished third in the 60-meter dash, finishing with a time of 7.12 seconds. Schorr was also sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.62 seconds. He was one-one hundredth of a second behind former teammate Ethan Westimayer (Laona, Wis./Laona), who was competing unattached.
- Tucker Briggs (Superior, Wis./Superior) set a new personal record and placed fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.56 meters.
- Deryck Parduhn (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and Ben Addler (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) set personal records in the mile, finishing with times of 5:12.37 and 5:21.38, respectively.
- Foster and Lynch placed second and third, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles.
- The 4-x-400-meter relay team earned a second place finish.
- Chancellor Davis earned a personal record and finished second in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 1.61 meters.
- Jordan Goldfine (Superior, Wis./Superior) placed third in the long jump with a leap of 6.15 meters.
- In the weight throw, Carson Wilhorn (Necedah, Wis./Necedah) and Bo Waletzko (Superior, Wis./Superior) went back-to-back, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Wilhorn had a heave of 14.95 meters, while Waetzko had a mark of 14.35 meters, setting a new personal record.
- In total, the Yellowjackets finished the day with 15 personal records and eight season bests in addition to Foster's school record.
- Other teams competing Saturday were the College of St. Scholastica, University of Minnesota Duluth and Lakehead University out of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The Yellowjackets will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 25 when they travel to Collegeville, Minn. to compete in the Saint John's Invitational.
