Besonen Shines Again, Spearheads Victory over Minnesota Morris

SUPERIOR, Wis. – After winning against Northwestern Wednesday night, the Yellowjacket women's basketball team was back in action Saturday, returning to Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) game of the week. It was a rematch of last year's championship game, as the 'Jackets hosted Minnesota Morris.

The last time UMM was inside the Mertz, they were holding the championship banner after defeating Superior 69-60. The Yellowjackets rebounded nicely in the first meeting with Minnesota Morris, as Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) paced the charge yet again with 30 points in a 64-42 win.

Game Notes
  • The Cougars took control early in the first, holding a lead until Besonen hit a jumper to make the game 11-10. She would then take a feed from Hannah Hause (Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) and nail her second three pointer, giving UWS a 14-10 lead after one.
  • UMM managed to tie things up in the second but were unable to snatch the lead. MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) hit a shot beyond the arc before Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) received a helper from Leccia to claim a jumper at 19-17.
  • Besonen sent a pass to Katie Dobson (Black River Falls, Wis./Black River Falls) and she joined the three-point party with under four minutes to go in the second. The Cougars countered and came within two, but Hause hit a jumper while Olson hit two from the charity line. This allowed the 'Jackets to enter the break with a six-point lead at 26-20.
  • Superior engineered a game-high 24 points in the third quarter. Besonen was responsible for ten points, while Olson, Emily Dehler (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy) and Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) joined the scoring.
  • Ferstl logged a jump shot, then Olson hit one of her own to extend the lead by nine at 32-23. Minnesota Morris cut Superior's lead to five until Kylee Hewitt (Hurley, Wis.) completed a jumper of her own nearing the middle of the third.
  • Besonen's layup and three pointer extended the 'Jackets' lead to ten at 41-31, but later in the period Dehler was sent to the line after drawing a foul. Draining both shots, she led way for another Besonen trey and a Hause jumper, boosting UWS by 16 at 50-34.
  • UW-Superior added onto their lead in the fourth, as head coach Emily Carpenter entered nine bench players to round things out. Olson, Besonen and Dehler continued to push the pace while the Cougars couldn't find their second wind. Time expired on the scoreboard and saw the Yellowjackets earn their fifth UMAC win of the season, defeating UMM 64-42.
  • Besonen accounted for nearly half of the 'Jackets' points, scoring 30 while adding six rebounds and two steals. Seven other Yellowjackets garnered points in the evening.
  • Superior scored 19 points off Cougar turnovers, while scoring 14 off a second chance.

The 'Jackets hit the road Wednesday as they take on Crown College. The opening tip is slated for 7:15 p.m. inside the Wild Athletic Center in St. Bonifacius, Minn.
