Maulson, Yellowjackets Blank Pointers, Win Fondy Pot Title

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's hockey team returned from the holiday break and returned to action this weekend at the Fondy Pot Invitational, hosted by Marian University.

After dispatching the host Sabres Friday, the Yellowjackets found themselves in the tournament championship game, where they would face off against a familiar foe.

It doesn't happen often that Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foes find themselves in non-conference action, but that was the case Saturday, with the Yellowjackets squaring off against UW-Stevens Point. Saturday's tilt was the second meeting of the year between the Yellowjackets and Pointers, as the teams met in Superior back on November 23, with the Yellowjackets falling 2-1.

Using that as motivation, the Yellowjackets were able to even the season series in a big way, blanking the Pointers 5-0 Saturday at the Blue Line Family Ice Center.

The victory was the fourth in a row for the Yellowjackets, who now sit at 8-6-2 overall to go along with a 1-3-0 WIAC mark.

Anna Maulson (Lac du Flambeau, Wis./Lakeland Union) was the star of the show Saturday, turning aside 24 shots to earn the shutout, her first as a Yellowjacket. She improved her record to 3-3-1 for the year.

Offensively, Aylie Dahl (Beaumont, Alberta/John Maland) scored her first collegiate goal in the first period, a goal that went on to be the game winner.

Game Notes
  • Dahl opened the scoring just 3:02 into the game to put the Yellowjackets in front.
  • In opening minute of the second period, a Stevens Point defender fumbled the puck at the blue line. Anna Scherling (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) stole it and fed Kaylin Garner (Anchorage, Alaska/Chugiak) who went in on a breakaway and scored her eighth of the year with a wrist shot over the goaltender's right shoulder.
  • The lead went to 3-0 early in the third period Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) picked up a loose puck, walked it through the slot and lifted a backhand just under the crossbar and in for her eighth of the year.
  • With just over six minutes to play in third period Stevens Point pulled its goaltender, and the Yellowjackets took advantage. Emma Booth (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) scored into the empty net at 14:33, and Hoops followed with her second of the game with just 1:01 to play, making the final score 5-0.
  • Hoops is now just one goal away from her career high of 10, set in 2022-23.
  • After scoring twice and adding an assist Friday, Hoops finished the tournament with five points.
  • Booth is two goals away from tying her career high.
  • The Yellowjackets outshot Stevens Point 37-24.
  • With her assist today, Scherling posted a three-point weekend.
The Yellowjackets return to action Tuesday, Jan. 14 when they travel to Moorhead, Minnesota to take on Concordia College. The opening faceoff is set for 5 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
