Volleyball Emerges Victorious Over Crown 3-1

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – After nearly two weeks away from the court, the Yellowjacket volleyball team resumed play Friday, traveling to the Wild Athletic Center to face the Polars of Crown College. Superior entered with a four-match winning streak and despite the break in play, the 'Jackets continued their winning ways with a 3-1 win.

Match Notes
  • The 'Jackets came out on top early with a 9-3 lead. The Polars tried to keep with Superior, but a six-point rally helped UWS cruise to a 25-11 opening set win.
  • Crown took the first two points of the second, but kills from Katlyn Jones (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer), Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford) and Kyndra Peterson (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) helped steer UWS back on track. Savanna Hering (Superior, Wis./Superior) garnered a pair of service aces shortly after, beginning the charge to go up by two sets with a 25-14 win.
  • The Polars fought back in the third, trading points with the 'Jackets through the midpoint. After a pair of Yellowjacket miscues Crown found themselves ahead and never looked back, taking the third set 25-18.
  • The fourth was a closer set to start. With the Polars trailing by four at 13-9, consecutive miscues gave the 'Jackets the upper hand with kills from Hohbein, Marena Saeger (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) and Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity), cruising ahead to a 25-15 win in the fourth to take down Crown.
  • Hohbein led with 14 kills, with Smith and Jones following with eight apiece.
  • Hering and Hohbein led defensively, collecting 19 and 18 digs, respectively.

The Yellowjackets (15-7, 4-1 UMAC) will return to action Saturday as they face Minnesota Morris. The opening serve is set for noon inside James Gremmels Court.
