SUPERIOR, Wis. – Friday featured the Yellowjacket volleyball team facing off against Bethany Lutheran College inside Mertz Mortorelli Gym. The Vikings entered Superior with an eight-match winning streak, while the 'Jackets claimed their last two matches in straight sets.
The Vikings held control in the first two sets, but the Yellowjackets found their footing and clawed back to defeat BLC in five, claiming a reverse-sweep victory at 3-2.
Match Notes
- Superior didn't hold a lead once in the opening set, as the Vikings rolled to a 25-16 win.
- The second featured back-and-forth points until a BLC kill started a seven-point rally to lead 15-7. From there the Vikings powered to a 25-14 win leading into the third.
- Off the serves of Katlyn Jones (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer), the 'Jackets fought back with kills from Sidney Bader (Milltown, Wis./Unity) and Kyndra Peterson (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) to lead 8-2. BLC knotted things up at 13-13 and both teams volleyed the lead until Peterson logged another kill at 18-17, beginning the eight-point stretch that led the 'Jackets to a 25-18 win.
- The fourth was once again led off the serves of Jones, as Peterson and Bader, alongside Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford) and Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity) guided the Yellowjackets to a 10-2 lead. From there Superior held the upper hand and forced a fifth set, winning the fourth 25-14.
- During the finale both teams traded blows early on, seeing Bethany Lutheran lead 8-7. A trio of kills from Jones, Peterson and Bader gave the 'Jackets the upper hand until Hohbein finished things herself, collecting three consecutive kills to finish the reverse sweep of BLC.
- Hohbein and Bader led offensively, securing 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) held 28 assists on the night, while Savanna Hering (Superior, Wis./Superior) finished with 29 digs, tying her career-best versus Concordia College.
The 'Jackets (13-7, 2-1 UMAC) return to action Saturday to face Martin Luther. Action inside the Mertz begins at 1 p.m.
