Superior Sweeps The Vikings, Return To UMAC Championship Match This Saturday

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Yellowjacket volleyball team entered their UMAC semifinal game coming off a regular season that saw them go 20-11. Their matchup in the semifinal was a team they beat twice in the regular season, Bethany Lutheran. In this game, the 'Jackets were able to sweep the Vikings and advance to the UMAC championship game.

Match Notes:

  • In the first set, the 'Jackets were able to control the tempo of the game as they took an 11-point advantage at 22-11 behind kills from Marena Saeger (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) and Katlyn Jones (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer). UWS was able to put the Vikings away in the set 25-13.

  • The second set was like the first as the 'Jackets controlled the pace; however, the Vikings fought back into the set. After BLC fought back into the set, UWS was able to seize momentum and put the Vikings away 25-17 behind back-to-back kills from Saeger.

  • In the third, both teams traded points back and forth with neither team able to take a steady advantage. Late in the set, BLC took a 24-22 lead before the 'Jackets took a timeout. After the timeout, UWS was able to rattle off four consecutive points and defeat the Vikings 26-24 and complete the sweep.

  • Offensively the 'Jackets were paced by Makenna Hohbein (Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford), who had ten kills while Sydney Smith (Milltown, Wis./Unity) and Saeger followed with nine and eight respectively.

  • Defensively, the Jackets got 14 digs out of Savanna Hering (Superior, Wis./Superior) with Hohbein and Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool), having 13 and 12. Also having a standout game on the defensive end was Smith, who had six blocks in the contest.

Up next for UWS, they head to Northwestern for the UMAC Championship. The first serve is set at 7 p.m. inside the Ericksen Center.
