UWS Drops Home Opener to MSOE 61-53

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Yellowjacket women's basketball team took the court for the first time this season in Mortorelli Gymnasium to take on MSOE. In the home opener against the Raiders, the 'Jackets found themselves on the losing end falling to MSOE 61-53.

Game Notes:

  • Scoring started out slow for both teams as it took almost four minutes of game time for MSOE to score the game's first points. The 'Jackets only made one field goal in the first quarter coming from Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and trailed after the first 8-7.

  • In the second quarter, the 'Jackets and Raiders traded buckets back and forth. With MSOE up two with 30 seconds remaining in the half, Azaria Hulbert (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell Central) drove the basket and made a lay-up to send the game to half tied 18-18.

  • In the second half both offenses woke up and traded points until the Raiders were able to take a nine-point lead. The 'Jackets were able to get the lead to five at the end of the quarter as MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to make the score 45-40.

  • The Yellowjackets tied the game for a moment in the fourth quarter before MSOE was able to take control and close out UWS.

  • Megan Schafer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) led the way for the 'Jackets offensively with 14 points while Olson had 13.

  • For MSOE Halena Hill had 18 points, while Mahima Chokshi had 17 of her own.

The Yellowjackets are back in action on Tuesday as they hit the road to take on Macalester. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Leonard Center in St. Paul.
