SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Yellowjacket women's basketball team had their first test of the 2025-26 campaign Friday, heading south to face the Wildcats of St. Catherine to begin the new year. Despite falling early the 'Jackets maintained pressure while both teams volleyed the lead midway through, but the Wildcats utilized their home-court advantage to come away with a 78-59 win.
Game Notes
- Both Megan Schafer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) and Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) represented the first Yellowjacket scorers of the season before St. Catherine took over offensively.
- Maddie Reott (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) hit a jumper inside the paint and Hope Carlson (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) drained a pair of shots from the charity stripe to cut the deficit to seven at 17-10.
- In the second quarter the 'Jackets came within five early on with another Schafer jumper, but the Wildcats utilized the remainder of the half to develop an 11-point lead heading into the intermission.
- MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) hit a three in the third quarter and Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) shortly followed with a jumper in the paint. From there Ferstl finished a three-point play to bring the score to 40-37, trailing by just three midway through.
- The Wildcats maintained at least a 15-point margin throughout the remainder of the contest, coming away with their first win of the season by a 78-59 decision.
- Schafer led with 16 points, while Ferstl collected 13. Defensively Schafer led with eight rebounds, followed by Ferstl's six.
- Superior shot 41.8 percent from the field, while St. Catherine collected a 43.9 percent mark. Furthermore, the 'Jackets were a perfect 8-8 at the free throw line.
The Yellowjackets return to the hardwood Saturday as they take on Carleton. The opening tipoff is set for 1 p.m. inside the West Gymnasium.
