Women’s Tennis Defeats Macalester, Concordia University

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saturday the Yellowjacket women's tennis team finally returned to play, facing Macalester and Concordia (Wis.) inside the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. Superior last saw action Oct. 19, and they dominated a pair of matches against UW-Stout and Bethany Lutheran by scores of 6-1.
 
Despite over three months away from competition, the Yellowjackets kept showcasing its winning ways, as they took down the Scots 5-2 before downing the Falcons 6-1 Saturday.
 
Match Notes
  • The Yellowjackets logged two-of-three wins from doubles play, earning the first team point. Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) and Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) took care of their Scots counterparts, winning 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
  • At No. 3 doubles, Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) defeated Sedona Crosby and Greta Laurel 6-0.
  • The duo of Anouk Bluemm (Nuernberg, Germany/Wilhelm-Loege Gymnasium) and Elif Oezen (Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany/Einstein Gymnasium) dropped a 6-2 decision to Elizabeth Trevathan and Savannah Haugen.
  • Macalester garnered wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, but the Yellowjackets dominated from there. Trevathan defeated Bluemm 6-4, 6-2 while Haugen emerged victorious over Oezen 6-3, 6-1.
  • Curtis was placed at No. 3 singles Saturday, taking down Megan Twomey 6-1, 6-2.
  • Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) took down Crosby 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, while Jonas cruised to victory over Berkeley Cox 6-1, 6-1.
  • Drew won her singles match with Scots' Mary Jacobson by a pair of 6-2 decisions.
  • The night cap for Superior began with a trio of wins in doubles, as Bluemm and Oezen rebounded to win 6-4 over their Falcon counterparts.
  • Araujo De Barros and Curtis teamed up and earned a 6-2 win over Maddie Brashaw and Abigail Schwartz, while Jonas and Drew earned their second 6-0 doubles win over Morgan Chyla and Payton Steward.
  • Oezen and Brashaw went through a back-and-forth battle, but the Falcons took the win at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (13-11) decision.
  • Bluemm salvaged a split on her singles matches Saturday, taking down Peyton Morgan 6-2, 6-4 at the top spot.
  • Curtis defeated her Concordia counterpart 6-2, 6-4 at the third spot, while Araujo De Barros claimed the tiebreaker victory at 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4).
  • Jonas and Wilfong handled their business at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, logging 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2 wins, respectively.
 
The Yellowjackets (5-1) are back in action Saturday, taking on Augustana (Ill.). First serve is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Green Bay Tennis Center in De Pere, Wis.
