Yellowjacket Men Thrive at Fourth Annual Maday Classic

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Saturday marked the fourth annual Maday Classic for the Yellowjacket men's track and field team, as they played host to NCAA Division II Minnesota Duluth, along with a trio of Division III schools in Northwestern, St. Scholastica and UW-River Falls.

After paying tribute to a former friend, coach, and mentor before the meet commenced, the 'Jackets went on to garner a total of ten personal records, six season-best marks and a school record on their way to a successful day inside the Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse.

Meet Notes
  • Jesse Ortiz (Medford, Minn./Medford) shined for Superior, as he ran the 60-meter and the 200-meter dashes. He would take second in the prelims with a 7.20 race time before turning in a first-place mark of 7.06 seconds in the finals.
  • In the 200-meters, Ortiz followed up with another top-spot ending, matching his school record time with a 22.57 second finish.
  • Edward Hakanson (Foxboro, Wis./Superior) and Frank Terwey each cracked the top ten in the 60-meter dash, picking up times of 7.36 and 7.39 in the finals, respectively.
  • Garrett Kroells (Green Isle, Minn./Sibley East) logged a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter race, setting a time of 55.44 seconds. Hakanson finished eighth in 58.03 seconds, which serves as a season best.
  • Finishing tenth in the 800-meter finals with a season-record time of 2:04.63 was Zach Reese (Zimmerman, Minn./Spectrum).
  • Three Yellowjacket distance runners consisted of the top ten in the 5,000-meter race. Maverick Hoogland (Catawba, Wis./Phillips) finished fourth in 16:10.77, while Kieran Johnson (South Range, Wis./Northwestern) sat eighth with a 16:32.19 before Jayde Canfield (Prescott, Wis./Prescott) garnered tenth in 16:52.01. All three times serve as personal records.
  • Joseph Kamara (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) would snag second place in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing the race in 9.15 seconds.
  • The relay team of Kroells, Hakanson, Ortiz and Ethan Ashworth (Danbury, Wis./Webster) were runners-up in the 4x200-relay, logging a 1:33.77 on the afternoon.
  • The 4x1600-meter race saw a quartet of Yellowjacket set a new school record. The senior duo of Aidan Doherty (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) and Zach Reese (Zimmerman, Minn./Spectrum) and the sophomore tandem of Dylan Uitto (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and Ben Plackner (Bovey, Minn./Greenway) were runners-up with a time of 18:05.59. This mark shatters the previous record of 18:09.73, set in 2016.
  • Field athletes also shined, with Jason Thomas (Superior, Wis./Superior) setting a season record mark of 4.05 meters in the pole vault. Jackson Fiamoncini (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) wasn't far behind Thomas, taking fourth with 3.90 meters.
