Yellowjackets Battle, But Fall Late to Pointers in 5-3 Loss

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's hockey team took the ice Friday afternoon looking to snap a recent skid, but despite a strong effort, the Yellowjackets came up short in a hard-fought battle against UW-Stevens Point.

The Yellowjackets traded blows with the Pointers through two periods, but a late surge from the home team proved to be the difference, as UWSP skated away with a 5-3 victory.
With the loss, the Yellowjackets drop to 9-11-2 overall and 1-8-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play.

Anna Maulson (Lac du Flambeau, Wis./Lakeland Union) got the start in goal, finishing the game with 21 saves. Her record for the year stands at 3-6-1.

Game Notes
  • Superior struck first in the opening period when Darbie Mattson (Atikokan, Ontario/Atikokan) finished off a setup from Anna Scherling (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) and Cora Coz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) at 6:26. The lead, however, was short-lived, as the Pointers responded with a pair of goals before the intermission.
  • Taylee Marks (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) pulled the Yellowjackets even at 10:19 of the second period. Right off the face-off she fired a shot from the point, but the Pointers once again answered late in the frame to take a 3-2 lead into the third.
  • Avery Olenik (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) gave Superior life early in the final period after being persistent in front of the net, tying the game at 4:22, but two unanswered goals from the Pointers, including an empty netter, sealed the win for the home team.
  • Courtney Leising led the way for UWSP with two goals, including the game-sealing empty-net tally.
  • UWSP tied the game at 1-1 in the first period with a goal on a delayed penalty call, then later in the first capitalized on special teams with a power-play goal. Meanwhile, the Yellowjackets went 0-for-2 on the power play, failing to convert their opportunities.
  • Shots on goal favored UWS, 31-26, but UWSP's timely scoring proved to be the difference.
The Yellowjackets are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8 for the second game of the weekend series against UWSP. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. at K.B. Willet Arena.
