DE PERE, Wis. – The Yellowjacket men's tennis team returned to the Green Bay Tennis Center Sunday for its second of two matches on the weekend. After they dropped a 6-1 decision to the Vikings of Augustana College, the final day of the state-long trip came against St. Norbert, and the Yellowjackets will return to Superior with a 6-1 win over the Green Knights.
Doubles play saw the Green Knights log their lone point, but singles action is when the Yellowjackets turned it on and swept the field.
Match Notes
- The lone Yellowjacket duo to win was Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber), defeating their Green Knights counterparts 6-2.
- Yash Chhabra (Jaipur, Rajasthan/Sanskar School) and Sharan Kanugovi (Bangalore, Karnataka/New Baldwin International School) fell 6-2 at the top spot, while Brandon Chu (Rogers, Minn./Rogers) and Mateo Abarca Pino (Riobamba, Ecuador/El Despertar) were handed a 6-1 loss by Charles Keller and Joe Pellechia.
- Superior won all singles matches in straight sets, beginning with Guetten Chaves who won a pair of 6-3 games at the top position.
- Kanugovi, entered as the No. 2 singles spot for the 'Jackets, defeated Jackson Harpt 6-3, 6-1. Chhabra handled things in his match at the third spot, winning 6-0, 6-3.
- Abarca Pino emerged victorious 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, but not before Sakakibara and Chu won their matches at Nos. 5 and 6 singles 6-1, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-3, respectively.
- Sunday's action snapped a five-match losing streak for Superior, dating back to Oct. 12 against the Eales of UW-La Crosse.
- The match was the third time the Green Knights and Yellowjackets have faced off against each other. With the win, UWS boasts a 3-0 streak against SNC.
The Yellowjackets return to the Twin Ports for their final tune up before their spring break trip to Alabama. They are set to take on St. Olaf at 12:30 p.m. next Sunday at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center.
