RIVER FALLS, Wis.— The Yellowjacket women's track and field team competed at the UWRF Winter Classic, hosted by UW-River Falls, showcasing several standout performances across various events.
The Yellowjacket women recorded multiple personal records and season-best performances throughout the meet, with notable finishes in sprints, distance events, jumps, and throws.
Meet Notes
- Leading the way for the Yellowjackets was Taylor DeCook (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect), who placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:36.03. She was followed closely by Cora Hudella (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) (sixth, 2:38.77) and Scarlett Vanderscheuren (Saginaw, Minn./South Ridge) (seventh 2:39.56), with Vanderscheuren setting a personal record (PR) contributing to a strong showing in middle-distance events.
- In the mile run, Simone Stephens (Scottsdale, Ariz./Saguaro) finished fourth with a time of 5:33.93, while Tea Boerner (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) followed in fifth place (5:38.25). Lilley Smith (Ironwood, Mich./Ironwood) secured eighth place (5:59.57), with all three setting PRs, adding to the team's solid distance performance.
- On the sprinting side, Summer Hesseldahl (International Falls, Minn./Falls) placed fifth in the 60-meter dash finals, clocking 8.39 seconds after advancing from preliminaries. Hesseldahl also performed well in the 200-meter dash, finishing ninth with a time of 28.61 seconds setting PRs in both events.
- In field events, Myla Volk (Wabeno, Wis./Wabeno) placed sixth in the high jump, clearing 1.30 meters. Volk also contributed in the long jump, finishing fifth with a mark of 4.60 meters, just behind teammate Grace Nonnemacher (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), who secured fourth place (4.66 meters). Riley Toivonen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) also competed, placing 10th (4.19 meters) and setting a PR.
- The Yellowjacket throwers had a strong presence as well, with Kory Windish (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) taking sixth place in shot put (10.63 meters). Sydney Cox (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) placed 10th with a season-best throw of 8.89 meters, and Isabel Miller (Medford, Minn./Medford) finished in 12th (8.69 meters). In the weight throw, Cox placed 12th with a PR of 10.64 meters, followed by Windish in 13th (10.40 meters).
- The Yellowjackets received a unique opportunity towards the end of the UWRF Winter Classic. Superior, alongside the other meet entrants, submitted both men's and women's runners in a mixed 4-x-400-meter relay race. SIx teams out of 20 were representatives of UW-Superior, and the top relay team finished 11th overall in 4:16.86.
The Yellowjackets will compete next back at home in the Maday Classic on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse.
