SUPERIOR, Wis. – The second and final day of the 2024-25 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) indoor track and field championships got underway Saturday morning. The Yellowjackets set a strong tone on the field Friday, posting a collective 112 points to lead the field in first place.
Championship Saturday was no different, as the 'Jackets compiled for a total of 242 points to win the program's ninth conference title.
Meet Notes
- During the 60-meter hurdle finals, Garrett Lynch (Portage, Wis./Portage) took second with a personal-best time of 8.59 seconds.
- Jesse Ortiz (Medford, Minn./Medford) and Will Schorr (Superior, Wis./Superior) took second and third, respectively, in the 60-meter dash. Ortiz logged a 7.076-second finish before Schorr crossed the line at 7.080 seconds. Edward Hakanson (Foxboro, Wis./Superior) garnered a new season-best in sixth place at 7.35 seconds.
- Two Yellowjackets cracked the top ten in the 800-meter race. Dylan Uitto (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) took third at 2:00.34, then Ben Plackner (Bovey, Minn./Greenway) finished the race in 2:06.80 for tenth. Both Uitto and Plackner garnered season-bests.
- Ortiz also saw action in the 200-meter dash, setting both a personal and meet record after garnering a 22.43 second first-place finish.
- Following Ortiz was Schorr, grabbing fourth in 22.88 seconds before Garrett Kroells (Green Isle, Minn./Sibley East) logged a new season-best mark of 23.35 seconds. Edward Hakanson (Foxboro, Wis./Superior) and Ethan Ashworth (Danbury, Wis./Webster) each logged a new high-water mark, as well.
- The 3,000-meter race had six Superior athletes in the top ten. Taking the top spot was Zach Reese (Zimmerman, Minn./Spectrum), clocking a 9:06.68. Aidan Doherty (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) (9:14.75) and Maverick Hoogland (Catawba, Wis./Phillips) (9:27.01) represented third and fourth, respectively, before the duo of Kieran Johnson (South Range, Wis./Northwestern) and Jayde Canfield (Prescott, Wis./Prescott) each set PR's at 9:32.68 and 9:41.12.
- Dominick Meisner (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) also cracked the top ten, setting a PR at 9:54.20.
- The 4x400-meter dash saw Superior take second place, just behind Martin Luther. The quartet of Kroells, Hakanson, Schorr and Ortiz set a season-best time in the event, garnering a 3:32.39.
- The throws area saw Bo Waletzko (Superior, Wis./Superior) set a new PR in the shot put, taking third place with a heave of 13.13 meters. Carson Wilhorn (Necedah, Wis./Necedah) (12.68 meters), Blake Rossmann (Brule, Wis./Brule) (12.57 meters) and Cameron Wegner (Superior, Wis./Superior) (11.88 meters) each finished sixth-through-eighth with Rossman setting a new high-water mark.
- Foster garnered a fifth-place finish in the triple jump, followed by Chance Davis (Superior, Wis./Superior) and Tucker Briggs (Superior, Wis./Superior) in eighth and tenth place, respectively.
- Jason Thomas (Superior, Wis./Superior) took the top spot in the pole vault at 4.30 meters, followed by Lynch (4.15 meters) and Rene Sems (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) (4.00 meters), respectively. Foster and Isaac Hanson (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) each set a 3.70-meter mark, with Hanson equalizing his personal record.
The team will now send select Yellowjackets to the Ripon Final Qualifier next Friday and Saturday. Action on Friday will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the Willmore Center on the campus of Ripon College.
