Men's Tennis Falls to West Florida

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The 2024-25 season has been a tough one so far for the Yellowjacket men's tennis team. The pre-season favorite to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) North Division title, the Yellowjackets have had difficulty getting on track as they navigate a robust non-conference schedule.

Wednesday the Yellowjackets faced arguably their most difficult test of the season, when they took on the University of West Florida. The Argonauts, who entered Wednesday with a 12-1 mark, have played a schedule loaded with ranked opponents and promised to be among the best the 'Jacket would see all season.

The Argonauts took two of the three doubles matches to open the scoring and went on to defeat the Yellowjackets 7-0 at Gulf Shores Tennis Complex.

The loss was the third in a row for the Yellowjackets, who fall to 3-10 on the year.

In doubles action the Yellowjackets won their only match of the day in the No. 2 slot, where Sharan Kanugovi (Bangalore, Karnataka/New Baldwin International School) and Yash Chhabra (Jaipur, Rajasthan/Sanskar School) defeated the West Florida duo of Jose Roa and Filipe Grebentsov 7-6, winning the tiebreaker 7-2.

Match Notes
  • The Yellowjackets were a break point away from taking the No. 1 doubles slot, as well, but Igor Guetten Chaves (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil/Colégio Adventista) and Vitor Sakakibara (São Paulo, Brazil/Colégio Saber) fell 5-7.
  • West Florida dominated in singles play, taking five of the six matches in straight sets.
  • Kanugovi dropped the opening set and the first game of the second set before retiring in his match at No. 2 singles.
  • Chhabra and Kanugovi won their third match of the year as a doubles pairing. They're unbeaten playing in the No. 2 slot.
The Yellowjackets will play their final match of the spring trip Thursday, when they take on Illinois Wesleyan. The first serve is set for 10 a.m. at Gulf Shores Tennis Complex.
