Yellowjackets Roll Past Belhaven

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The swing through Alabama has, so far, been a good one for the Yellowjacket women's tennis team.

UWS opened the trip with a win over Illinois Wesleyan and followed that with a win over Earlham. Both of those wins came Monday, and the Yellowjackets haven't been back on the court since.

That changed Thursday, as the 'Jackets were back in action with an early-morning meeting against Belhaven. The 'Jackets, who entered the day having won eight of their last 10, wasted little time jumping on a depleted Belhaven squad, rolling to a 7-0 win at Gulf Shores Tennis Complex.

The win was the third straight for the Yellowjackets, who remain unbeaten in Alabama and move to 11-3 on the year.

Belhaven only had five players Thursday, and the Yellowjackets took the doubles point by winning one of the two matches played. They then took all six points in singles action to sweep their way to a victory.

Match Notes
  • Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) rolled at No. 2 double, defeating Belhaven's Evey Moore and Millie Gallarno 6-3.
  • Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) got the win at No. 1 singles, rolling 6-4, 6-0.
  • The Yellowjackets won three singles matches by 6-1, 6-0 scores. Elif Oezen (Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany/Einstein Gymnasium) accomplished the feat at No. 2 singles, while Giulia Araujo De Barro and Daylyn Drew (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) did the same at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
  • Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) also had little trouble, winning at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-0.
  • The Yellowjackets got walkover wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
  • Araujo De Barros and Curtis now sits at 10-2 on the year in singles play.
  • Jonas and Wilfong are unbeaten as doubles partners.
The Yellowjackets will close out their spring trip Friday, when they take on St. Thomas out of Texas. The first serve is scheduled for 8 a.m. at Gulf Shores Tennis Complex.
