Yellowjackets Score 26 Runs in Sweep of Northland

SUPERIOR, Wis. – A day after rolling to a win over Northland College in a snappy one hour, fifty minutes, the Yellowjacket baseball team was back on the turf Friday, hosting the LumberJacks for a pair of games to close out their weekend series.

Thursday's game was played at venerable Wade Stadium in Duluth, while Friday's games shifted back to Superior. And even though the venue changed, the quickness of the contests did not.

Fueled by big innings in each game, the Yellowjackets rolled Friday, sweeping Northland by scores of 13-1 and 13-3 at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Friday's games were also played in snappy fashion, with the first game being completed in one hour, thirty-three minutes, while the second was a minute over two-hour mark. With the wins, the Yellowjackets have now won three straight and improved to 8-9 overall while moving to 3-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

For the second day in a row, Trey Sybrant (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael-Albertville) paced the Yellowjacket offense, going a combined 5-for-7 at the plate with two runs batted in. He also scored seven times in the two games. Sybrant now leads the Yellowjackets with a .364 batting average. Tanner Voight (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) also had a big day at the dish, going 5-for-7 and scoring four runs.

Game One Notes
  • It took the Yellowjackets a while to get the bats going in the opener, as they were hitless into the third inning and trailing 1-0. That changed as the 'Jackets plated five runs with two outs in the bottom of the third.
  • Payton Steiner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) got it going with a two-run homer to right center, bringing in Noah Dagostino (Andover, Minn./Andover) to put the Yellowjackets in front. It was Steiner's first home run of the season.
  • Sybrant and Voight had back-to-back singles and came home on Maxton Howell's (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) team-leading fourth home run of the season to push the lead to 5-1.
  • The Yellowjackets tacked on three more in the bottom of the fifth. Voight doubled home Sybrant, and Cole Ondrus (Esko, Minn./Esko) doubled home Voight. Ondrus then came in on a bases-loaded walk.
  • A five-run sixth closed out the scoring. Steiner scored on a Sybrant double, and then Sybrant came in on a double by Voight. Ondrus doubled home Voight before Brian O'Dwyer (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) closed out the scoring with a home run to right center.
  • The Yellowjackets had 12 hits, compared to two for Northland. Sybrant and Voight had three hits each.
  • Zach Romans (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael) got the start and went the distance, allowing on unearned run on two hits with eight strikeouts to improve to 2-1.
  • Steiner, Voight, Howell, Ondrus and O'Dwyer all had at least two runs batted in.
Game Two Notes
  • As he did in the first game, Steiner got the scoring started, launching his second home run of the day over the fence in left center to make it 1-0.
  • Howell singled home Sybrant in the third to extend the lead.
  • Jonny Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior) scored on an error in the fourth and Sybrant came in on a sacrifice fly in the fifth to push the lead to 4-1.
  • After Northland closed the gap to 4-3 in the top of the sixth the Yellowjackets blew the game open.
  • Steiner and Sybrant had back-to-back run-scoring singles to get the two runs back. Another run came home on a wild pitch before Ondrus brought home Sybrant with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-3.
  • Back-to-back Northland errors brought home two more runs before a Rhodes single made it a seven-run inning, pushing the lead to 11-3.
  • In the bottom of the seventh Howell walked with the bases loaded and Ondrus singled up the middle to make it 13-3, invoking the run rule.
  • The Yellowjackets had 12 hits for the second game in a row, led by Howell with three. Steiner, Sybrant, Voight and Rhodes all registered two hits.
  • Josh Pritchard (Surrey, British Columbia/Clayton Heights Secondary) started on the mound and went four innings, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
  • Declan Higgins (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) came on and pitched an inning of scoreless, hitless relief and was credited with the win, improving to 1-1 on the year.
  • Aiden Pfeifer (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Kevin Rahe (Princeton, Minn./Princeton) also pitched an inning of relief.
  • Steiner and Sybrant now have six-game hitting streaks.
The Yellowjackets will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Winona, Minn. to take on Saint Mary's. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
