FARGO, N.D. – The Yellowjacket women's tennis team faced their second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponent in as many weekends, taking on the Cobbers of Concordia College. Last weekend the 'Jackets fell to a nationally ranked Golden Gusties squad, and their last tune-up before Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) came Saturday.
Superior left Courts Plus Community Fitness with a 7-0 victory over Concordia College, entering conference play on the right foot.
Match Notes
- UWS came away with two-of-three doubles victories, securing the first point of the day. The duo of Andreina Tejada (Quito, Ecuador/Isaac Newton) and Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) came away with a 6-4 win against Anna Hacker and Emma Farder.
- Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) and Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale), slotted at No. 2 doubles, won in similar fashion against Ava Lowman and Isabelle Smith.
- Tejada came away with a victory at the top singles position. After falling 6-1 in the opener, she rallied to win 7-5 in the next game before claiming the tiebreaker 1-0 (10-5).
- Elif Oezen (Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany/Einstein Gymnasium) went through a gauntlet at the second spot. After a 7-6 (7-9) decision in the opening game, she came away with a game two win at 6-1. The finale saw Oezen claim the 1-0 (11-9) victory to take down her Cobber counterpart.
- Curtis won her singles bout handedly at the third spot, defeating Annalise Skrade 6-0, 6-1. Araujo De Barros won in similar fashion, defeating Lowman 6-1, 6-0.
- Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) rounded out the Yellowjacket victories at the Nos. 5 and 6 slots, respectively. Jonas took down Smith 6-1, 6-3 while Wilfong defeated Kimman 7-5, 6-1 on the day.
- Wilfong's winning streak in singles reached six Saturday.
The 'Jackets open UMAC play in two weeks, facing Crown College Saturday, Apr. 12. The opening serve is set for 10 a.m. at Waconia High School in St. Bonifacius, Minn.
