Day One Sees Yellowjackets Sweep North Central

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. – Saturday afternoon saw the Yellowjacket baseball team complete a doubleheader sweep against North Central. Both games were dominated by the Yellowjacket hitters, finishing the day with 25 hits.

The first game saw six home runs by Superior, while the second game saw five more blasts. Four different Yellowjackets had a multi-homer day, including Maxton Howell (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) with three. Cole Ondrus (Esko, Minn./Esko), Wylee Lottman (Kerkhoven, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) and Brian O'Dwyer (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) ended their day with two apiece.

Game One Notes
  • The second inning is where UWS jumped to an early lead. Tanner Voight (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) would walk to lead off the inning, and he would later score thanks to a two out, two run homer from O'Dwyer.
  • Lottman would follow that up with a long ball of his own to expand the Superior lead to 3-0. Jonny Rhodes (Superior, Wis./Superior) would single to right field followed by Noah Dagostino (Andover, Minn./Andover) hitting a double, plating Rhodes.
  • The 'Jackets wouldn't score again until the top of the fourth, when Payton Steiner (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) singled. He would score Lottman, who led the inning off on a walk. Voight would hit a sacrifice fly to score Dagostino, making the score 7-2.
  • The top of the fifth saw another two-run home run by Dagostino to extend the lead to 9-2.
  • Superior hit back-to-back-to-back homers by Howell, Ondrus and O'Dwyer. This would secure the Yellowjackets' 13-2 win.
  • Zach Romans (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael) was given the ball in game one, pitching the full seven innings allowing just four hits and two runs.

Game Two Notes
  • In similar fashion to game one, game two would be scoreless until the top of the second inning when Howell would hit his second home run of the day.
  • Just two batters later, Ondrus would tab another homer to his stat line. Scoring himself and Trey Sybrant (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael-Albertville), who walked in his previous at bat, would make the score 3-0.
  • With one out in the top of the third inning, Howell would hit his third long ball of the day, extending the 'Jackets' lead 4-0.
  • The top of the fourth would conclude in three runs scored with a two RBI double from Voight before a sacrifice fly from Sybrant.
  • Voight led off the sixth inning with a home run followed by Howell reaching first on a Rams error, and Ondrus earning an RBI single.
  • Lottman logged his second homer of the day, driving in Ondrus and extending Superior's lead to 12-2. Despite another Rams run scoring, the 'Jackets would earn a game two victory at 13-3.
  • Garnering his fifth victory was Ben Welle (Melrose, Minn./Melrose), who toed the rubber for seven innings. He allowed just three hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.
  • Kaden Corlett (Gordon, Wis./Solon Springs) relieved Welle in the eighth, striking out three-of-six batters faced.
  • Both Howell and Rhodes led in game two, going 3-4 with three runs scored.
