Women's Tennis Rolls to 7-0 Win over Northwestern

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Friday was an historic day for the Yellowjacket women's tennis team.

Playing in their first home match in 2025, the Yellowjackets were already in the thick of their Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) schedule, having already played three conference foes within the last week. Friday was a little different story, however, as the Yellowjackets were facing their toughest UMAC foe to date, Northwestern.

With a win, the Yellowjackets could not only extend their winning streak, but also put a stranglehold on the UMAC standings.

The Yellowjackets were able to do both of those things, and they accomplished the mission in most dominant fashion. Dropping only one doubles match on the day, the Yellowjackets rolled past the Eagles, 7-0 at the Yellowjacket Outdoor Tennis Complex Friday.

With the victory, the Yellowjackets (16-5, 4-0 UMAC) did several things. First, they extended their winning streak to five matches. Second, they matched last year's program-record 16 victories, with several matches still to play on the schedule. Lastly, and most importantly, the Yellowjackets clinched a share of the UMAC North Division title and can win it outright next Friday when they take on Bethany Lutheran in the conference finale.

The Yellowjackets were paced by Elif Oezen (Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany/Einstein Gymnasium) and Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech), who teamed up for a doubles victory, while individually rolling to victories in singles play.

Match Notes
  • Despite a loss at No. 1 doubles, the Yellowjackets earned the doubles point in convincing fashion
  • Kate Jonas (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) and Claudia Curtis (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles, while Oezen and Wilfong were victorious at No. 3 doubles by the same score.
  • Jonas and Curtis have won their last five doubles matches.
  • Oezen rolled at No. 2 singles, winning 6-2, 6-1, her fifth straight singles win.
  • Giulia Araujo De Barros (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio Sabre) put the Yellowjackets on the cusp of the win with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. She has now won four singles matches in a row and eight of her last nine.
  • The 'Jackets earned the win when Anouk Bluemm (Nuernberg, Germany/Wilhelm-Loege Gymnasium) finished off the competition at No. 1 singles, winning 6-3, 6-4.
  • Wilfong rolled, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, improving to 8-1 on the year in singles play.
  • Jonas had an even easier time winning at No. 5 singles, making quick work of her opponent, 6-1, 6-1.
  • In singles play Jonas has won four in a row. In doubles action she improved her record to 12-6.
  • Curtis was the only Yellowjacket who didn't win her singles match in straight sets. After dropping the first set 2-6, Curtis rallied, taking the second set 6-2 before finishing off the match with a 6-3 win in the third set.
The Yellowjackets will host Bethany Lutheran Friday, April 25 in their UMAC regular season finale at the Yellowjacket Outdoor Tennis Complex. The first serve is set for 3 p.m.
