Yellowjacket Women Claim Second Straight UMAC Title

SUPERIOR, Wis. – A year ago, the Yellowjacket women's tennis team had a history-making season.

The Yellowjackets won a program record 16 games in 2023-24, including a perfect mark in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play on the way to claiming the circuit's North Division title, its first.

What would they do for an encore? Well, as good as they were last year, the Yellowjackets have been even better this year.

Entering play Friday, the Yellowjackets had equaled their program record for wins and were once again unbeaten in the UMAC. A win Friday, and the Yellowjackets would set a new winning standard for the program, once again go unbeaten in the conference and add another year to their championship banner in the Marcovich Wellness Center.

Well, not only did the Yellowjackets win, they did it with an exclamation point.

The Yellowjackets slugged it out with Bethany Lutheran in doubles play, but swept the matches to earn the point. They then rolled in straight sets in all six singles matches to defeat the Vikings 7-0 at the Yellowjacket Outdoor Tennis Complex Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Yellowjackets (17-5, 5-0 UMAC) extended their winning streak to six matches heading into their regular season finale Saturday. They also reached 17 wins for the first time in program history and have repeated as UMAC North Division champions.

Junior Brooke Wilfong (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) had a big day for the Yellowjackets, first getting a win in doubles action where she teamed with Elif Oezen (Rheda-Wiedenbrueck, Germany/Einstein Gymnasium). Wilfong is now 11-5 in doubles play this season and 2-0 when teamed with Oezen. Her victory in singles play moved her mark on the year to a sparkling 9-1.
