Emily Carpenter Resigns as Women's Basketball Coach

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin Superior and Yellowjacket Athletics have announced Emily Carpenter has resigned as the head women's basketball coach. Carpenter is leaving UW-Superior to pursue other opportunities.

"I am extremely grateful for my time these past three years at UW-Superior. I am very thankful for the entire women's basketball team, the athletics department and the Superior community for everything they have given me during my time here," Carpenter said. "I was a tough decision as these student-athletes mean the world to me and I'm very blessed to have coached such amazing young ladies. I will forever cherish the memories we have made together on and off the court.

"Superior has been home to me for more than seven years now, as a student-athlete and coach, and will forever be a special place to me. I will always be a Yellowjacket and look forward to continuing to support the success of the women's basketball program and the entire athletics department."

Carpenter came to UW-Superior in 2022 after a stretch as an assistant softball coach at Gustavus Adolphus College. Upon her arrival, Carpenter made an immediate impact, guiding the Yellowjackets to a 10-14 record, including an 8-6 mark in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play and a berth in the UMAC Tournament.

The next year Carpenter and the Yellowjackets took off, going 18-9 overall and 13-1 in UMAC play, winning the conference regular season title. She followed that with a 17-11 season in 2024-25, including an 11-3 UMAC mark, as the Yellowjackets won the conference regular season and playoff championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In three seasons, Carpenter fashioned with a 45-34 record and a 32-11 UMAC mark.

Prior to coaching, Carpenter was a point guard for the Yellowjackets for four seasons. She appeared in 106 games, scored 813 points. She dished out 336 assists, the second most in program history. Her 149 steals rank ninth all-time.  She is second in three-point field goals made (160) and sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.415). She was also a member of the softball team.

"We are appreciative for Emily's contributions and leadership in our women's basketball program over the past three years," said UW-Superior director of athletics Nick Bursik. "Her impact helped guide the program to championships and a return to the NCAA tournament. We wish her the best in her future endeavors"

Carpenter added, "I want to personally thank Nick Bursik for providing me with the opportunity to lead the women's basketball program over the years. I am blessed for the lessons and leadership he has provided me in my journey."

A national search for Carpenter's replacement will begin immediately.
