UW-Superior Prepares to Break Ground on New Track and Field Throws Facility

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Superior and Yellowjacket Athletics are excited to announce the development of a new, state-of-the-art throws facility, further strengthening the university's commitment to excellence in track and field.

Construction of the new, first-class facility is already underway, well in advance for UW-Superior to host the 2026 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship on May 1-2.

Located behind the Ross-Hawkes Hall on the site of the former baseball field, the facility will feature dedicated throwing vectors designed to support both training and competition for the following events:
  • Hammer Throw
  • Discus
  • Shot Put
  • Javelin

"This project represents a major step forward for Yellowjacket Athletics as we prepare to host the UMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship this season," said Nick Bursik, UW-Superior director of athletics. "This venue will compliment Superior Choice Credit Union (SCCU) Stadium and help ensure we have premier facilities for our track & field program."

Designed to provide optimal throwing vectors and athlete safety, the facility is expected to elevate the training experience for student-athletes while also allowing the university to attract high-level meets in the future.

"We're thrilled to offer our throwers a dedicated space to train and compete right on campus," said Glen Drexler, Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach. "Not many institutions have the ability to build a top-tier throwing facility like this – it's a game-changer for our program."

With the addition of the new throws venue, UW-Superior continues to invest in athletic infrastructure that supports both performance and community engagement. The UMAC Outdoor Championship is scheduled for May 1-2, 2026.
