Yellowjackets Cruise Past Eagles 61-42

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Yellowjacket women's basketball team claimed its third Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) victory of the season Wednesday, defeating Northwestern 61-42 inside Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Game Notes
  • Both teams got off to a slow start, but the Yellowjackets picked it up with offense from MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset), Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and Hope Carlson (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) early on.
  • The Eagles began to pick up the pace in the second quarter, but a jumper from Maddie Reott (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) began nine straight Yellowjacket points heading into halftime, leading UNW 26-15.
  • An early three from Marin Blom kept the Eagles close, but Ferstl started to heat up and helped the 'Jackets regain control the rest of the way.
  • Megan Schafer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) and Kylee Hewitt (Hurley, Wis./) joined the scoresheet in the third, adding to the 'Jacket lead and going into the fourth with a 16-point advantage at 46-30.
  • Kyra Latvala (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) drew a foul midway in the fourth and split her free throws from the stripe, and shortly checking into the game, Abby Johnson (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) drew a foul and logged shots from the line as well.
  • Following a Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) layup with an assist to Cara Olson (Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) and an Eagle layup in the paint, the 'Jackets emerged victorious at 61-42.
  • Three Yellowjackets finished in double-digit points in Ferstl (12), E. Olson (11) and Carlson (10). Both Ferstl and Reott had seven boards in the contest.
  • Leccia garnered four steals while Hewitt had three.

The 'Jackets hit the road to take on Minnesota Morris Saturday. The opening tip off inside James Gremmels Court is scheduled for 3 p.m.
