Second Half Comeback Pushes Polars Past Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Yellowjacket men's basketball team hosted Crown on Wednesday night looking to earn their second conference win. The Yellowjackets held a ten-point lead in the second half, but a 22-5 run from the Polars to close the game allowed them to come away with a 72-65 victory.

Game Notes:

  • Crown had a 10-2 lead to start the game before Rocco Paulson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) scored, and Evan Bennett (Superior, Wis./Superior) hit a three-pointer to cut into the deficit.

  • The Polars led by as many as 13 points in the first half before a run of buckets from Caiden Lecce (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic) and Nick Nordaune (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) allowed the 'Jackets to take a 31-30 lead.

  • To end the half, Nordaune knocked down a three and Micah Young (Minneapolis, Minn./Thomas Edison) slammed home a fast break dunk to allow the 'Jackets to have the halftime lead 36-34.

  • In the second half, the two teams traded buckets, but the 'Jackets were able to gain the advantage with help from three pointers by Bennett, Gage Braiedy (Mora, Minn./Mora) and Hayden Quimby (Menasha, Wis./Xavier) sitting with a ten-point lead with seven minutes to play.

  • 12 straight points from the Polars allowed them to roar back into the lead as they finished the game on 22-5 run.

  • Nordaune led the 'Jackets in scoring with 20 points off the bench while no other 'Jacket finished in double figures.

  • For the Polars Parker Behne led them in scoring with 20 points. Tyler Smith finished the game with a triple-double scoring 12 points, dishing out 11 assists and grabbing ten rebounds.

The Yellowjackets (5-14, 1-5 UMAC) are next in action on Saturday as they begin the back half of their conference schedule when they host North Central. Tip-off between the UWS and NCU is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. inside Mortorelli Gymnasium.
