Yellowjackets Outlast North Central 66-56

SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Yellowjacket women's basketball team hosted North Central on Saturday afternoon. In the two squads prior matchup the Superior was able to cruise past the Rams by a final score of 84-60. In this matchup the 'Jackets also were victorious, winning by a final score of 66-56.  

Game Notes:  

  • The Yellowjackets jumped out to an early 7-0 lead as Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) scored four seconds into the contest and 24 seconds later Megan Schafer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) knocked down a three-pointer.  

  • The Rams battled back tying the game at 14 in the final moments of the first quarter, but Olson nailed a shot at the buzzer to make 16-14.  

  • North Central was able to open a six-point lead in the second quarter, but Hope Carlson (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) came alive scoring nine points in the quarter to allow the 'Jackets to take the lead heading into halftime 31-24. 

  • In the third quarter, Carlson continued her offensive output as she knocked down two more buckets. Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley), Megan Schafer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) and Maddie Reott (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) also helped the efforts as Superior led by 12 at the end of the frame.  

  • Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) gave the 'Jackets their largest lead of the game at 17 before free throws from Carlson iced the game.  

  • Carlson finished the game with 21 points leading all scorers. MyKenzie Leccia (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) and Reott finished the game with ten points each with the ladder pulling down 14 rebounds. 

The Yellowjackets (8-12, 5-2 UMAC) are next in action Wednesday as they hit the road to take on Northwestern. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 inside the Ericksen Center in St. Paul.
