Yellowjackets Use Third Quarter Surge to Down Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Yellowjacket women's basketball team hit the road Wednesday to take on Northwestern a team they played two weeks ago at home. Despite trailing at the half, the 'Jackets used a second half surge to pick up the 63-54 victory.

Game Notes:

  • The Yellowjackets led by as many as six points in the first quarter, getting buckets from Maddie Reott (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton), Hope Carlson (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) and Kylee Hewitt (Hurley, Wis./). Northwestern was able to close the deficit at the end of the quarter to one-point trailing 13-12.

  • Superior came out a bit sluggish in the second quarter as they trailed by six before free throws from Carlson and Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) cut the lead to two. The Eagles led at halftime by four as Carli Elrod sunk a jumper at the horn.

  • In the third quarter the 'Jackets came out swinging regaining their lead with help from Megan Schafer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg)Kyra Latvala (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) and Ferstl all scoring.

  • The Yellowjackets would end the quarter with a nine-point lead as Carlson and Hewitt scored.

  • In the fourth quarter the 'Jackets led by 15 points after an Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) three pointer, but the Eagles would not go away quietly. Northwestern would cut the lead down to just five but a dagger three from Schafer allowed the 'Jackets to come away victorious.

  • Olson and Reott led the Yellowjackets in scoring each dropping 12 points while Carlson secured a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds. Ferstl also had a nice game on the boards finishing with 13 eight of which were offensive.

Superior (9-12, 6-2 UMAC) is next in action Saturday as they travel to take on Martin Luther. Tip-off between the Yellowjackets and Knights is set for 3 p.m. inside LSC Gymnasium in New Ulm, Minn.
