Women’s Basketball Defeats Rams in UMAC Opener

MINNEAPOLIS – The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) basketball slate began Wednesday, which saw the Yellowjacket women's basketball team travel to Clark-Danielson Gymnasium for a meeting with the Rams of North Central. The rugged non-conference schedule paid off for Superior, as the hot offense pulled away for an 84-60 victory.

Game Notes
  • The 'Jackets and Rams volleyed points early on, as Maddie Reott (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton), Colleen Claude (Centuria, Wis./Homeschool) and Charlotte Ferstl (Plain, Wis./River Valley) all aided the early Superior offense. From there the Rams responded, but UWS utilized a trey from Kyra Latvala (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) and a jumper from Kylee Hewitt (Hurley, Wis./) to lead by six at 15-9.
  • NCU began to close the gap as the quarter ended, but not before a late three from Hope Carlson (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) gave the 'Jackets a five-point edge at 23-18.
  • The Rams allowed Superior to lead by as many as seven points on a few occasions, but North Central stayed within striking distance until a late rally from Claude, Ferstl and Elsa Olson (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) added points for an eight-point lead going into halftime.
  • UWS outscored the Rams 21-16 in the third and 23-12 in the fourth, leading to an 84-60 win on the road to commence conference action.
  • Ferstl displayed a balanced attack throughout the evening, shooting 70 percent from the field and scoring 18 points while leading with 12 rebounds.
  • Reott and Leccia finished with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
  • UWS shot 58.6 percent from the field, their best field goal percentage of the campaign.

The Yellowjackets are back home Saturday where they host Bethany Lutheran. Action is set for 3 p.m. inside Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
