WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Saturday marked the eighth and final game for the Yellowjacket baseball team in the Sunshine State. They would face off against the Storm of Simpson College holding a five-game winning streak.
Simpson scored four runs in the first three innings, but the Yellowjackets responded with five unanswered runs to capture a 5-4 victory. With the win, Superior finishes their annual spring trip 7-1, their best record in 14 years.
Game Notes
- In the first inning, an RBI infield single brought in the first run of the game for the Storm courtesy of Trenten Kingrey. In the third, he hit a three-run homer to right field, bringing the score to 4-0.
- The top of the fifth began with Bennett Keller (Evansville, Wis./Evansville) singling up the middle before Cody Glasheen (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) singled through the left side. Isaac Johnson (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) would club an RBI single up the middle to plate Keller, cutting Simpson's lead to three at 4-1.
- Brian O'Dwyer (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) hit an RBI single to left center plating Noah Dagostino (Andover, Minn./Andover), who began the inning with a walk.
- Later in the seventh, O'Dwyer singled to shortstop and cleared the bases courtesy of a Storm miscue, giving the Yellowjackets a 5-4 lead and ultimately the win.
- Starting on the mound was Zach Romans (Saint Michael, Minn./Saint Michael), throwing three innings before giving way to Carter Thielke (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls), who threw 4.1 innings of shoutout baseball. His record on the year sits at 2-0.
- Kevin Rahe (Princeton, Minn./Princeton) toed the rubber for the final 1.2 innings, striking out one of five batters faced for his second save.
- O'Dwyer led offensively, going 2-2 with a pair of RBIs.
The Yellowjackets (9-3) will return to the Midwest and gear up to face Saint Mary's in a four-game series beginning Saturday. The opening pitch at Max Molock Field is set for 1 p.m.
