What an adventure.  That's about the best way that the Yellowjacket women's hockey team could describe day one of their trip into Michigan's Upper Peninsula for a two-game set at Finlandia.  Heavy snow slowed the trip, the team bus broke down not once but twice, forcing the team to arrive in Hancock, Mich. aboard a school bus and they didn't have a pre-game meal until there were less than two hours before the drop of the puck.  For some teams this would be too much to handle and they would allow the issues to get the best of them.

The Yellowjackets, however, went the other way, dominating play from start to finish in a 6-0 win over the Lions.

From the very beginning the Yellowjackets (5-3-2, 4-2-1 NCHA) carried the play, outshooting Finlandia 23-2 in the opening period, but still they only led 1-0 after one period.  Leading goal scorer Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) opened the scoring for the Yellowjackets, netting the game-winning goal at 11:56 of the first period.  Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) and Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) picked up assists on the goal.

The Yellowjackets blew the game open in the second period, scoring three times.  Kiara DeKezel scored her third goal of the year just 2:57 in to make it 2-0.  The lead bulged to 3-0 when Jenn Paul (Paynesville, Minn./Paynnesville) converted on a power play at 8:33 for her third goal of the year.  Minutes later, Kelsey Firkus (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Chilliwack Senior Secondary) scored her first goal of the game at 10:04 to make it 4-0 after two periods.

Paul would score again on the power play at 8:34 to make it 5-0.  Firkus would score her second goal of the game at 12:37 to close out the scoring, making it 6-0.

Firkus enjoyed a huge game, scoring twice and adding three assists.  Paul had two goals and two assists while DeKezel had a goal and three assists.

Amy Torgerson (Wentzville, Mo./Gilmour Academy) was largely untested in the game, making just 15 saves in picking up the win for the Yellowjackets.  Stephanie LaMore made 40 saves in the losing effort for Finlandia.

The Yellowjackets took two penalties for four minutes, while Finlandia took four penalties for eight minutes.  The Yellowjackets went 2-3 on the power play and the Lions were 0-2.

The two teams will play the second game of their weekend series on Saturday, December 10.  Game time is 12:00 p.m.
