On Tuesday night it was a battle of nationally-ranked Division III women's hockey teams at Don Roberts Rink in St. Peter, Minn., as Gustavus played host to the Yellowjackets.  Both teams are ranked in a pair of national polls - Gustavus is fifth in the d3hockey.com poll and sixth in the latest poll on USCHO.  The Yellowjackets, meanwhile, are tenth and ninth in the same respective polls.  Gustavus took the ice determined to show that the gap between the two was bigger than it appears in the rankings.

Outshooting the Yellowjackets heavily in each period, the Gusties spent much of the night on the offensive, but were unable to break through until there was just 1:32 to play in overtime, handing the Yellowjackets a 1-0 defeat.

Gustavus controlled much of the play in the game, holding a 43-20 edge in faceoffs and outshooting the Yellowjackets 53-18.  Time and again the Gusties put shots on net, and throughout the game Amy Torgerson (Wentzville, Mo./Gilmour Academy) was there.  The only blemish on an otherwise sparkling performance by the Yellowjacket netminder came when Carolyn Draayer put home her tenth goal of the season in the closing minutes of overtime.

It was an extremely clean game, with only three penalties called throughout.  The Yellowjackets took one penalty for two minutes while Gustavus took two penalties for four minutes.  The Yellowjackets were 0-2 on the power play, while Gustavus was 0-1.

Torgerson was spectacular, making 52 stops in the losing effort.  Her record drops to 3-2-1 on the year.  Marah Sobczak improved to 3-0-0, making 18 saves in the shutout win for Gustavus.

The game was the final game of 2011 for the Yellowjackets (6-4-2, 5-2-1 NCHA).  The next action for the Yellowjackets will be January 13-14, 2012 when they play host to St. Norbert College at Wessman Arena.
