Box Score

Yellowjackets 4, St. Scholastica 2
Box Score

Both teams came into the game with a lot on the line, as each was jockeying for playoff positioning in the NCHA standings on the season's final weekend.  Early on, however, you'd never know it, as both teams came out a bit flat and through the first eight minutes, each team was only able to muster one shot on goal.

The trend continued for the Yellowjackets, who never had a legitimate scoring chance in the first period.  Being on the penalty kill twice didn't do anything to help their cause.  St. Scholastica had the two best scoring chances of the period, both of them coming when they were on the power play.  Thanks to a checking penalty on Ashley Birdsall (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) and a tripping call on Kelsey Firkus (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Chilliwack Senior Secondary) called about seven minutes apart, the Yellowjackets spent the middle part of the period shorthanded, but the penalty killers got the job done and kept the Saints off the board.

That all changed late in the period when St. Scholastica's Alex Blair let a shot go from the point to make it 1-0 with just :16 left in the first period.

Shots on goal were even 6-6 through the first period.

Things started to come together for the Yellowjackets during the second period, who continued their tear on the power play and tied the game.  Bailey Lane (Armada, Mich./Armada) let a wrist shot go that trickled through a couple of St. Scholastica defenders and found it's way into the net to tie the game 1-1 at 4:35 of the second period.

The Yellowjackets continued to carry the momentum and took their first lead of the game when Ashlee Olson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) took a wrist shot between the circles that beat St. Scholastica goaltender Rachel Borchardt to make it 2-1.  The even-strength goal came at 10:13 of the second period.

The Yellowjackets went on to take two more penalties in the period and successfully killed them both off.  Through two periods, the Yellowjackets went 1-3 on the power play while the Saints went 0-3.  The Yellowjackets exploded with 19 shots in the second period while St. Scholastica registered eight.

The Saints would answer on the Yellowjackets two-straight goals early in the third period when Monika Waidcher put a shot home to tie the game 2-2 at 3:21 of the third period.

Olson continued her big night when she slipped a shot past Borchardt at 14:10 of the third period, scoring her second goal of the game and once again breaking the tie, making it 3-2.

Kiara DeKezel put the icing on the cake when she skated up the left side with the puck and took a shot from the top of the circle that snuck between Borchardt's right skate and the post to make the score 4-2.  It marked the third straight game with a goal for DeKezel.

The Yellowjackets outshot the Saints 35-24 for the game.

Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) got the start in net for the Yellowjackets, stopping 22 shots.  Borchart went on to turn away 31 saves for St. Scholastica.

The Yellowjackets(15-6-3, 13-4-2 NCHA) will cap of the regular season tomorrow (Feb.18) at Wessman Arena where they will face the St. Scholastica.  Game time is at 2:00 p.m. and can be viewed live via webcast at www.ifan.tv.
