Box Score

SUPERIOR, Wis.—The Yellowjackets and Saints wasted no time putting goals on the board, combining for five in the first period.  St. Scholastica broke through first when Jordy Klimek snuck a wrist shot past Amy Torgerson (Wentzville, Mo./Gilmour Academy) to give St. Scholastica a 1-0 lead.  The Yellowjackets answered about a minute-and-a-half later when Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) put one home at 1:54 of the first period to tie the game 1-1.

The Yellowjackets took their first lead at 6:43 of the first period when Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) put one away, letting a shot go from between the circles that got through traffic to make it 2-1. The lead wouldn't last long as St. Scholastica would tie the game 2-2 at 11:13 of the first period on a Nina Waidacher slap shot that got past Torgerson.

Late in the period, the Yellowjackets would go on their first power play.  The Saints would ultimately kill it off, and use the momentum to take the lead before the period was out.  Klimek's would score her second goal of the game at 18:25 of the first period, and it was 3-2 Saints after one.  St. Scholastica outshot the Yellowjackets 11-8 in the opening frame.

The second period was quieter offensively than the first, with the teams going back-and-forth, creating chances but unable to capitalize.  That changed in part due to Schultz and in part due to a little luck.  Schultz took a shot that hit a defender and trickled its way into the net to tie the game at three goals apiece.  The Yellowjackets outshot the Saints 10-8 in the second period.

The third period proved to be more like the second than the first, as both teams played tight defensive hockey, neither wanting to make the mistake that would result in the go-ahead score.  The Yellowjackets found themselves in a whole for a good portion of the period as their penalty kill unit was on the ice on three different occasions, but again they did the job and kept the score tied.  Each team had ten shots on goal in the period.

In the overtime, it was the Saints who would come up big, and they would do it early.  Waidacher found a teammates' rebound and put a shot past Torgerson just 15 seconds into the extra session to give St. Scholastica a 4-3 victory.

Torgerson finished with 23 saves while Rachel Borchardt finished with 24 saves for St. Scholastica.

The Yellowjackets, (15-7-3, 13-5-2 NCHA) who clinched the No. 2 seed in the O'Brien Cup Playoffs will return to action on Friday (Feb.20) at 7:00 p.m. when they play host to St. Norbert College. The game can be viewed live via webcast at www.ifan.tv.
