Box Score

The power play was the name of the Yellowjackets' game in front of a sparse crowd at Mars Lakeview Arena last night in a 3-1 victory.  This time it was the penalty kill's turn to lift the Yellowjackets', scoring two short-handed goals in the process of a 3-3 tie against St. Scholastica on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints set the tone early in the second period when Michelle Fischer skated the puck up the left side of the ice and dished the puck over to Nina Waidacher.  Waidacher took the puck toward the net and let a wrist shot go that hit the arm of Yellowjacket goaltender Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) and found it's way into the net to make the score 1-0 Saints.  The goal came at 3:30 of the second period.  Briana Stephens would give the Saints a 2-0 lead in a similar fashion.  She skated up the left circle after taking a pass from Alex Blair and snuck a shot into the side of the net at 6:56 of the second period.

The Yellowjackets' responded before the conclusion of the second period, despite being on the penalty kill.  Caitlyn Hunt (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) would take a tripping penalty at 11:52 of the second period, but that didn't faze the Yellowjackets.  Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) blocked a shot by Alex Blair and took the puck the distance, beating Saints goaltender Teraysa White to make the score 2-1 on a textbook unassisted goal at 12:48 of the second period.  The strong Yellowjacket penalty kill wasn't finished as Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) added a shorthanded goal of her own by recovering a turnover in the Yellowjackets' end and taking it the distance to tie the game at a goal a piece at 18:47 of the second period.

The Saints and Yellowjackets went on to trade goals in the third period.  St. Scholastica struck first on the power play when Alana Levido capitalized on the to make the score 3-2 at 7:15 of the third period.  Chelsey Wierschem (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) responded for the Yellowjackets when she took a wrist shot that hit White's left leg pad and trickled it's way into the net to knot the game at three goals a piece at 16:59 of the third period.

Peters made 23 saves for the Yellowjackets while Whte registered 35 saves for St. Scholastica.

The Yellowjackets (9-6-1, 5-5-1 NCHA) will return to action next Friday (Jan. 25th) when they will take on Marian University at Wessman Arena.  Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
