Box Score

Bounces started to go in favor of the Yellowjackets in game two as the puck found the back of the net nine times en route to a 9-1 win over Marian University.

Things started going the Yellowjackets' way right off the bat.  Ashley Birdsall (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) set the tempo for the women in black and yellow when she slipped a shot from the bottom of the left circle past Sabre goaltender Amanda Alexander to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead at 2:15 of the first period.  Much like the previous night, the Yellowjackets showed a promising start right out of the gates.  They were peppering shots on Alexander like there's no tomorrow, however this afternoon proved to be a different story.  The Yellowjackets managed to come up with eight more goals to close out the contest opposed to one on Friday night despite almost having an identical amount of shots on goal both days.

The Yellowjackets would notch another goal at 8:18 of the first period when Kelsey Firkus (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Chilliwack Senior Secondary) recovered a turnover and took a wrist shot that beat Alexander to make the score 2-0.  Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) added to the scoring massacre at 9:22 of the first period when she took possession of the puck off a blocked shot by Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) and juked out a few defenders in front of the net.  She would poke the shot into the net to make the score 3-0.  Chelsey Wierchem closed out the scoring for the Yellowjackets at 13:03 of the first period to make the score 4-0 before Rachel Mullendore spoiled Megan Leikkari (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I)'s shutout to make the score 4-1 going into the first intermission.

The second period saw the Yellowjackets' notch two more goals.  Firkus added her second goal of the contest at 12:50 of the second period to make the score 5-1.  Schultz was next to add her second goal of the game when she took a pass from Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/) at the right circle and lasered a shot past Alexander to make the score 6-1 at 18:45 of the second period.

The Yellowjackets weren't done, they would add three more goals in the game's final period to make the score 9-1.  Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) contributed to the goal scoring at 2:14 of the third period to make the score 7-1.  The Yellowjackets' added a power play goal at 7:29 of the third period when Sheryl Kaskiw (Souris, Manitoba/Souris Collegiate) took a shot from the top of the right circle, which was eventually tipped into the net by Bailey Lane (Armada, Mich./Armada) to make the score 8-1.  Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) closed out the game's scoring at 12:12 of the third period to make the score 9-1.

Leikkari made 14 saves for the Yellowjackets while Alexander stopped 33 shots for the Sabres.

The Yellowjackets (11-6-1, 7-5-1 NCHA) will return to action on Friday (Feb.1st) when they will take on St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.  Game time is at 6:30 p.m.
