Yellowjackets rebound to avoid sweep

Kiara De Kezel scored the game-winning goal against Stevens Point on Saturday.
Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, UW-Stevens Point 1

After a slow first period, the Yelowjackets rebounded with a monstrous three goal second period that propelled them to a 3-1 victory over UW-Stevens Point.  The Yellowjackets rebound on Saturday afternoon after the Pointers handed them their first loss of the 2013-14 season on Friday night.

It took the Yellowjackets the first period to warm up a bit.  The Pointers took advantage of that with strong play, muscling out eight shots on goal.  One of those shots happened to find the back of the net when Shauna Bollinger fired a shot past Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead at 5:49 of the first period.

The last two periods proved to be all Yellowjackets, coming up with three unanswered goals.  Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) gave the Yellowjackets a spark on the power play with a goal at 2:04 of the second period to tie the game at a goal a piece.  Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) was credited with the assist on the play.  The Yellowjackets took the lead for good at 7:53 of the second period when Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) took a shot that Janna Beilke-Skoug couldn't handle to make the score 2-1.  Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/) put the exclamation point on the Yellowjackets' scoring with an unassisted goal at 10:46 of the second period to extend the lead to 3-1.

Peters made 27 saves for the Yellowjackets while Beilke-Skoug stopped 35 shots for the Pointers.

The Yellowjackets (5-1-2, 2-1-1- WIAC) will return to Wessman Arena on Friday, Dec. 6 against UW-River Falls.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
