Yellowjackets win again

Simply stated, things are rolling for the Yellowjacket women's hockey team. After shutting out UW-Eau Claire on Friday night at Wessman Arena the teams rode south on Highway 53 to the Hobbs Ice Center for the second game of their home-and-home series.

Different day, different venue, same result.

The Yellowjackets scored twice in the first and three times in the second to defeat the Blugolds by a 5-0 score for the second time in less than 24 hours.

With the win the Yellowjackets remain tied with UW-River Falls for second place in the WIAC, one point behind first place UW-Stevens Point. The win also stretched the Yellowjacket winning streak to seven games and their unbeaten streak to 11 games.

The victory was also the fourth consecutive win to come via the shutout. The Yellowjackets have now gone unscored on over their last 270:43.

Senior Kelsey Firkus (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Chilliwack Senior Secondary) opened the scoring for the Yellowjackets at 4:31 of the first period, netting her second of the season on assists from Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) and Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) to stake the Yellowjackets to a 1-0 lead. At 12:44 of the period Alexis Reid (Dryden, Ontario/Dryden) added to the lead, scoring her second of the season to make it a 2-0 game. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/) and Teal Crosson (Alexander, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) assisted.

Reid picked up her second goal of the game at the 9:10 mark of the second period to push the lead to 3-0. The goal was unassisted. A few minutes later the score went to 4-0 when Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North), on assists from Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) and Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine), scored her 11th of the season at 13:23. For Olmstead, the goal tied her career high, set last season as a sophomore. The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring at 17:24 of the middle frame when Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) picked up her sixth of the season to make it a 5-0 game. Shrift and Coey picked up their second assists of the game on the goal.

The teams went scoreless in the third period and the Yellowjackets rolled to their seventh straight win. They are also unbeaten in their last 11. The winning streak is tied for the fifth-longest in school history, while the unbeaten streak is tied for third longest.

Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) continued her impressive senior season, turning aside 14 saves to earn the shutout, her sixth of the year. Peters is now 13-2-4 on the season. Paige Turner got the start for the Blugolds and made 15 saves through two periods before being lifted in favor of Kim Van Brunt, who stopped all seven shots she faced.

On the power play both teams went 0-for-5. Both teams took five penalties for ten minutes on the afternoon.

Milestone Update: Over the weekend several players reached milestones. Crosson and Shrift each played their 100th career games. Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) scored her 45th goal, good for third all time. Sheryl Kaskiw (Souris, Manitoba/Souris Collegiate) notched her 57th assist, which is second all time. Mayhew mpoved into ninth on the all-time assist and points lists with 39 and 66, respectively. In the net Peters is third in games played (64), third in minutes played (3816:17), fourth in wins (37), second in saves (1334), and fourth in shutouts (11).

Next up for the Yellowjackets (14-2-4, 4-2-2 WIAC) is a pivotal home contest against UW-River Falls on Saturday, February 1. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and the game can be watched over the iFan Sports Network. The game is also the annual "Stick it to Cancer" game, with the Yellowjackets wearing special limited edition orange jerseys, the cancer color of leukemia. The jerseys will be auctioned off following the game, with the proceeds going toward leukemia awareness and research in Superior and Douglas County. The event is a cooperative effort between UW-Superior and the Superior Jaycees.
