Yellowjackets drop heartbreaker to Pointers

Karen Larson
Box Score
UW-Stevens Point 3, Yellowjackets 2

The Yellowjackets came into tonight's matchup vs. UW-Stevens Point riding high with a 6-1 record.  Coming off a WIAC sweep vs. UW-Eau Claire last week, the Yellowjackets were the closest thing to invincible.  However, #5 UW-Stevens Point have seen similar success this season with their only blemish coming at the hands of #6 UW-River Falls 3-2 on Nov. 14.  For an early season contest, a lot of implications lie for both squads from poll position to NCAA rankings.  With both teams so evenly matched, the last team to score was most likely to win the game.  That team happened to be UW-Stevens Point, who escaped with a 3-2 victory.

Things kicked off on the wrong note for the Yellowjackets when Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) was tagged for an interference penalty at 5:47 of the first period.  The Yellowjackets overcame that obstacle when Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) snuck a shot to the back of the net, giving the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.  The shorthanded goal came at 6:15 of the first period.

The Yellowjackets were on the penalty kill once again when Brooklyn Gillanders (Kyle, Saskatchewan/Centennial Collegiate) was called for checking at 5:42 of the second period.  The Yellowjackets weren't too successful this time around when Ali Biagini beat Yellowjacket goaltender Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate) on the power play at 6:39 of the second period, tying the game at a goal apiece.

The back and forth hockey didn't stop as each team always seemed to find an answer to their mistakes.  Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) found that answer for the Yellowjackets at 10:58 of the second period when Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) fed her a pass to the right circle.  From there, Larson fired a one-time shot that Pointer goaltender Janna Beilke-Skoug couldn't handle to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead.

The Pointers eventually found an answer, but not until after the second intermission.  The Yellowjackets didn't do themselves any favors when Lexie Weiss (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm) was called for tripping 0:27 into the third period.  Megan Menotti capitalized on the player advantage with a goal off a scrum in front of the net to tie the game at two goals apiece at 2:11 of the third period.

It was the Pointers coming up with the final goal of the game to secure them the victory.  Emily Lester was the hero on this night when she took a shot that caught Yellowjacket goaltender Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate) off guard on her right side to give the Pointers a 3-2 lead.  The time of the game-winning goal came at 13:33 of the third period.

Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) paced the Yellowjackets offensively with a pair of goals on the night.

Kobar made 27 saves in net for the Yellowjackets while Beilke-Skoug stopped 37 shots for the Pointers.

The Yellowjackets (6-2, 2-1 WIAC) will look to even the series against UW-Stevens Point tomorrow, Nov. 21 at Wessman Arena.  Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
