Yellowjackets down #5 Pointers

Megan Leikkari
Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, UW-Stevens Point 1

The Yellowjackets have had a monkey on their back for quite some time and were looking to remove it on Saturday afternoon against UW-Stevens Point.  That monkey has a lot to do with the Yellowjacket's struggles against ranked opponents in recent history.  The Yellowjackets came into this afternoon's contest with an 0-2 mark against ranked opponents this season.  In order to improve upon the abysmal 2-6-4 record against ranked opponents last season, the Yellowjackets were going to have to find anyway to come up with a victory against #5 UW-Stevens Point.  The Yellowjackets took a step toward shedding that monkey off their back with a 3-1 victory over UW-Stevens Point.

Adversity was the name of the game in the first period when the Yellowjackets found themselves in a hole early.   Pointers forward Ali Biagini had a lot to do with that when she snuck a shot past Yellowjackets goaltender Megan Leikkari (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) to give UW-Stevens Point a 1-0 lead at 6:54 of the first period.

However, the Yellowjackets set the tempo from that point forward and didn't look back an inch.   Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) led off the Yellowjacket offense when Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) found her at the right circle.  From there, De Kezel let go a one-time shot that Pointer goaltender Janna Beilke-Skoug couldn't handle to tie the game at a goal a piece at 17:03 of the first period.

The Yellowjackets took the lead for good on the power play at 1:46 of the second period when Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) found a wide-open Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) in between the circles ten feet in front of the net.  Adair let a slap shot go that blanked Beilke-Skoug to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead.

The Yellowjackets continued to find success on the power play early in the third period, much due to the upper-class duo of Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) and De Kezel.  It was Schultz who found the back of the net to give the Yellowjackets a 3-1 lead at 1:56 of the third period.  De Kezel and Pamela McLeod (Gillam, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall Prep) were credited with assists on the play.

Leikkari stopped 52 shots for the Yellowjackets while Beilke-Skoug made 21 saves for the Pointers.

The Yellowjackets (7-2, 3-1 WIAC) will return to action on Friday, Dec. 5 when they travel to UW-River Falls.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
