Yellowjackets defeat Sabres in scoring fest

Karen Larson
Box Score
Yellowjackets 8, Marian University 7

After a dominating performance in a 7-2 thrashing last night, the Yellowjackets had all the confidence in their court heading into the back end of a two-game swing with Marian University.  Sometimes too much confidence can work as a disadvantage to a team and that happened to be the case this afternoon.  One could compare this contest to a game of chess; whenever a team made a strong move, the opponent would catch them flat-footed and put their mistake into the back of the net.  The Yellowjackets came up on top, edging Marian University 8-7.

The Yellowjackets didn't waste any time producing offensive flair and Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) made that loud and clear.  She tallied her first goal of the contest :36 into the first period to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

Like I said before, whenever a team made a strong move, the opponent followed that up with another one.  Marian University did just that with back-to-back goals to take command of the lead.  Nina Laurie led off the scoring for the Sabres with a power play goal at 4:02 of the first period to tie the game 1-1.  Kaitlyn Johnson gave the Sabres their first lead of the game at 10:05 of the first period, making the score 2-1.

The Yellowjackets tied the game 2-2 when Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) slipped a shot past Sabre goaltender Amanda Alexander at 11:18 of the first period.  The Sabres and Yellowjackets closed out the rest of the first period trading goals, taking a 3-3 tie into intermission. First it was Amanda Waigand giving the Sabres a 3-2 lead on the power play at 16:59 of the first period.  Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) followed that with her second even strength goal of the contest at 19:49 of the first period, making the score 3-3.

The second period proved to be the same story, back and forth hockey.  The Sabres continued their power play success when Sarah Bier snuck a shot past Yellowjacket goaltender Megan Leikkari (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) at 8:19 of the second period to give them a 4-3 lead.

Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) answered for the Yellowjackets with an even strength goal at 9:06 of the second period to knot the game at four goals apiece.  Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) built on that momentum for the Yellowjackets when she buried a goal at 11:36 of the second period to give them a 5-4 lead.

The Sabres closed out the second period with a pair of power play goals.  Brittany Syms struck first when she tallied a power play goal at 15:13 to tie the game at five goals apiece.  Amanda Waigand gave the Sabres a 6-5 lead on the player advantage at 19:40 of the second period.

The Yellowjackets went into the third period with vengeance and Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) was a big reason why as she tied the game 6-6 :58 into the third period.   Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) gave the Yellowjackets the lead at 2:07 of the third period when she put home a power play goal to make the score 7-6.  Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) added to the scoring fest at 3:19 of the third period with a goal to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 8-6.

The Sabres closed in on the Yellowjackets at 14:06 of the third period when Paige Johnson tallied a goal to narrow the score to 8-7, where things stood until the final buzzer.

Leikkari made 26 saves in net for the Yellowjackets while Alexander stopped 51 shots for Marian University.

The Yellowjackets (9-4, 3-3 WIAC) will enjoy holiday break before returning to Wessman Arena on Monday, Jan. 5 to take on Finlandia University.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
