Offense at a premium in 1-1 tie with Pointers

Shanley Peters making one of her 21 third period saves Friday against Stevens Point.
Box Score

Yellowjackets 1, Stevens Point 1 (OT)

Friday night at Wessman Arena the Yellowjacket women's hockey team hosted UW-Stevens Point in the first game of a weekend series that could go a long way in determining who, and where the team will play when the WIAC playoffs get underway. The Yellowjackets, who had dropped their last two games entering Friday's tilt, sat third in the WIAC with ten points, four points back of UW-River Falls and five points behind the Pointers, who lead the conference.

In other words, the Yellowjackets needed as many points as possible to keep pace with the top two teams in the conference.

They did secure a point on Friday, but so did the Pointers.

Each team scored a first-period goal and then turned it over to their goaltenders, who put on a pair of dazzling performances as the teams skated to a 1-1 tie.

And as good as Stevens Point's Janna Beilke-Skoug, who finished the game with 20 saves was, Yellowjacket goaltender Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) was even better. Peters finished the game with a season-high 45 saves, including 26 combined in the third period and overtime to help the Yellowjackets pick up a point.

The Yellowjackets drew first blood at the 11:31 mark of the first period. Controlling the puck down low in the offensive zone, Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) moved the puck to the front of the net and Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) was there to bang it home for her 11th goal of the season, tying her for the team lead in that category. Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) also picked up an assist on the play.

After the goal the Pointers began to assert themselves more offensively and picked up the equalizer when Janel Winters scored with just two minutes to play in the first, tying the game at one.

Play was relatively even in the second period before the Pointers turned it up a notch in the third period. With a severe territorial advantage the Pointers buzzed the Yellowjackets to the tune of 21 shots on goal, including a flurry with under five minutes to play, but time and again Peters was there to turn them away.

With nothing decided after 60 minutes, the teams played five minutes of scoreless overtime, with the Pointers outshooting the Yellowjackets 5-0 in the extra session. For the game the Pointers outshot the Yellowjackets 46-21.

Each team took one penalty for two minutes, and each team went scoreless on the power play.

The Yellowjackets (14-4-5, 4-4-3 WIAC) and the Pointers will do battle in the second game of their weekend series on Saturday afternoon at Wessman Arena. The puck will drop at 2:00 p.m. It is also Senior Day, as the Yellowjackets will honor the six seniors who will be wrapping up their careers at UW-Superior at the end of the season. The game can be watched live on the iFan Sports Network, with Matt Johnson on the call.
