Yellowjackets and Pointers tie again

Hailey Adair's sixth goal of the season gave the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead in the second period on Saturday.
Box Score

Yellowjackets 2, Stevens Point 2 (OT)

For the second time in less than 24 hours the Yellowjacket women's hockey team squared off against UW-Stevens Point at Wessman Arena, and for the second time in as many days they needed more than the alloted 60 minutes to determine the outcome. And like Friday night's contest, even the five additional minutes were not enough to declare a winner.

The Yellowjackets came out with a great effort on Senior Day, carrying the play for long stretches and coming up with the best chance of the extra session, but instead were forced to settle for a 2-2 tie.

With the tie the Yellowjackets close out the WIAC portion of their schedule with a 4-4-4 mark, locking them into third place in the conference standings. They will finish ahead of UW-Eau Claire and behind both UW-Stevens Point and UW-River Falls. The Pointers are one point ahead of the Falcons in the standings, but the Falcons have one game remaining in their conference schedule, that coming against UW-Eau Claire next Saturday, February 22.

On Saturday the teams played scoreless through the first period with the Yellowjackets outshooting the Pointers 9-5 in the frame. Saturday's game was also a little rougher than Friday, when the teams took just one penalty apiece. Each team went scoreless on the power play in the first period.

The Yellowjackets, like they did on Friday, drew first blood.

At 5:43 of the second Hayley Epema (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) notched her first goal of the season, and just the third of her career, finishing off a set up from Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead. Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) also assisted.

Stevens Point rallied to tie the game less than two minutes later on a goal by Emily Lester.

Just over two minutes after Lester's marker the Yellowjackets regained the lead. This time it was freshman Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) finding the back of the net, scoring her sixth goal of the season at 9:28 of the second to make it 2-1. The goal, which came on the power play snapped a five-game goal drought for Adair. Kelsey Firkus (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Chilliwack Senior Secondary) and Sheryl Kaskiw (Souris, Manitoba/Souris Collegiate) assisted. For Kaskiw, it was her 58th career assist, the second-most in the history of Yellowjacket women's hockey.

Early in the third period Stevens Point's Meredith Ingebretson was called for a five-minute major for checking from behind and assessed a game misconduct. Adair took a penalty on the play as well, and as the teams were playing four-on-four the Pointers again tied the game. At 6:39 of the third Betsy Anderson scored unassisted to even the score at 2-2.

Like Friday's game, Stevens Point held a big edge in shots in the third period, outshooting the Yellowjackets 14-6, but aside from the one goal Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) stood her ground.

When the teams went to overtime the Pointers again carried the play. With under two minutes left Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) was called for a penalty, but the Yellowjacket penalty kill did the job and shut the door on the Pointers. Stevens Point outshot the Yellowjackets 4-1 in the overtime.

The best chance of the period went the Yellowjackets way, however. Adair worked her way behind the defense and was sprung on the breakaway. She made a move and got Pointer goaltender Janna Bielke-Skoug out of position, but was unable to put her second of the game, and the game-winning goal, away, forcing the teams to settle for one point apiece.

Stevens Point took four penalties for 19 minutes, while the Yellowjackets took four penalties for eight minutes. On the power play the Yellowjackets were 1-for-3 while the Pointers were 0-for-3.

Peters was her normal rock-solid self in goal, finishing with 30 saves. She is now 13-4-6 on the year. At the other end Bielke-Skoug made 26 saves for the Pointers.

The Yellowjackets (14-4-6) will close out the regular season on Tuesday, February 18 when they host Twin Ports rival St. Scholastica at Wessman Arena. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and can be viewed on the iFan Sports Network.
