The Yellowjacket women's hockey team saw its 2013-14 season come to a close on Saturday night, unthinkable, considering that a month ago they were one of the hottest teams in the nation. After Friday's loss the Yellowjackets needed a win, not just to stay alive in the WIAC playoffs, but also to have any hope of qualifying for the NCAA tournament.

In the end, they just couldn't get the offense they needed to accomplish that mission.

Through 59 minutes the Yellowjackets and UW-Stevens Point played even, neither finding a way to score a goal. The Pointers ultimately did find the back of the net, in the final minute, and didn't give the Yellowjackets any time to counter, earning a 1-0 win to eliminate the Yellowjackets and advance to the WIAC championship game against UW-River Falls on March 8. River Falls advanced with a 6-1 win and a series sweep over UW-Eau Claire.

It looked like the teams were heading for a five-minute overtime, the last chance for the Yellowjackets to gain the victory and extend their season when Pamela McLeod (Gillam, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall Prep) was whistled for tripping with just over two minutes to play. It was the fifth power play of the game for the Pointers, and they took advantage.

With just 49 seconds left in the third period, Megan Menotti scored an unassisted goal, beating Yellowjacket goaltender Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) for her fifth of the season.

The Yellowjackets pressed in the final minute, but there just wasn't enough time for them to mount an attack and get the tying goal.

Peters, a rock in goal throughout the season, and her career, finished the game with 29 saves. At the other end, Janna Beilke-Skoug earned the shutout for the Pointers, making 21 stops.

The Yellowjackets took five penalties for 10 minutes, while the Pointers took two penalties for four minutes. The Yellowjackets were scoreless on the power play, while the Pointers went 1-for-5.

The Yellowjackets close the 2013-14 season with a record of 14-7-6.
