Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, Finlandia 1

Offense wasn't a problem for the Yellowjacket women's hockey team in its early-week series with Finlandia. Rather, generating shots on goal wasn't a problem, but making them count was a much more difficult task than expected heading into the two-game set. One day after the Yellowjackets established a new school record for shots on goal in a single game with 78, they put another 63 on goal in their second game against Finlandia. Despite the volume of shots, however, the Yellowjackets again struggled to find the back of the net for the second day in a row.

After a scoreless opening period the Yellowjackets scored twice in the second, putting enough distance between themselves and a Finlandia team whose goals this season have been few and far between, earning the 3-1 win over the Lions in a matinee at Wessman Arena Tuesday.

With the victory the Yellowjackets (11-4-0, 3-3-0 WIAC) have now won four consecutive games, while Finlandia is still searching for its first win of the year.

The Yellowjackets continued the onslaught of shots on goal early Tuesday, outshooting Finlandia 24-2 in the first period, but like Breanna Merriam did Monday, Taylor Gustafson shone in goal for the Lions and turned aside every Yellowjacket offering.

In the second the Yellowjackets were finally able to break through, and it was a familiar face doing the damage. Team captain Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area), the second all-time leading scorer in school history, got the Yellowjackets on the board, picking up her seventh goal of the season just 3:49 into the period to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) had the lone assist. Less than half a period later Schultz struck again, this time converting on assists from Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) and Pamela McLeoad for her eighth of the year and a 2-0 Yellowjacket lead. Schultz's second of the game came at 12:08 of the period.

The Yellowjackets added to the lead at 6:52 of the third period when Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) banged home a puck on the doorstep for her sixth of the season to extend the advantage to 3-0. De Kezel and Schultz assisted on the play. The assist for Schultz was her 17th point of the season, moving her into a tie for the team scoring lead.

After having just five penalties called in the first 47:00 of the game, the officials whistled the teams for nine in the final 13 minutes of play, and while on the power play Finlandia got on the board.

With both Schultz and Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba) in the penalty box, the Lions converted during the 5-on-3 power play to cut the lead to 3-1. Lindsey Jackman was credited with the goal for Finlandia, her third of the season, second most on the Lions.

Minutes after getting on the board the Lions again broke through, but the shot glanced off the post and stayed out of the net, preserving the two-goal lead for the Yellowjackets. Then in the waning minutes of the period the Yellowjackets again went shorthanded, but this time the penalty kill did the job, keeping the Lions at bay and closing out the win, and the sweep.

For the second straight game Finlandia goaltending was under siege, as Gustafson finished the game with 60 saves. In the two games, Gustafson and Merriam combined for 135 saves on 141 shots, posting a save percentage of .958. At the other end, Kobar earned her second win of the week, as she turned aside 20 Finlandia shots to improve to 5-1-0 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took nine penalties for 18 minutes, while Finlandia took five for 10 minutes. On the power play the Yellowjackets were 0-for-2 and Finlandia was 1-for-4.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Yellowjackets, as they are back in action Friday, January 9 in the Twin Cities where they will take on Bethel University. Game time from Blaine, Minnesota is set for 7:00 p.m.
