Big Second Period Pushes Yellowjackets Past Pointers

Box Score

Yellowjackets 2, UW-Stevens Point 1

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Friday as they went on the road to take on WIAC foe UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers entered the contest as the ninth ranked team in the nation, so this was bound to be a challenge for the Yellowjacket squad. They answered the challenge in a big way, scoring two second period goals en route to a 2-1 victory.

The two teams skated to a scoreless first period, but the Pointers were knocking at the doorstep, as they spent most of the period in the Yellowjacket offensive zone. By the time the period was done the Yellowjackets had been outshot 18-4.

The Yellowjackets managed to wake up offensively in the second period, as they scored twice in three minutes to take an insurmountable lead.

Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) opened up the scoring for the Yellowjackets, netting her fourth of the season at 7:44 into the period. Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover), and Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) assisted on the even strength marker. Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) continued her strong season, as she netted her fourth of the season 10:24 into the period. Abby Constant-Bercier (The Pas, Manitoba) assisted on the even strength goal.

The third period saw the Falcons once again take control of the offense, as they controlled the puck for much of the period. They were able to cut the Yellowjacket lead in half at 16:05 in the third when Ali Biagini found the back of the net. Betsy Anderson assisted on the power play marker.

The Pointers pulled their goalie with less than a minute to go in the third, but Yellowjacket goalie Natasha Singer (Kimberley, British Columbia/Warner) closed the door to preserve the 2-1 victory.

Singer started in goal for the Yellowjackets for the second consecutive game, allowing one goal while making 38 saves. She is now 1-0-1 on the season.

Lisa Fowle started in goal for the Pointers, allowing two goals while making 16 saves.

The Yellowjackets were 0-4 on the power play, while the Pointers were 1-5.

The Yellowjackets (4-3-2, 1-1-1 WIAC) will face-off against the Pointers again Saturday, November 21, as they look to sweep the weekend series. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
